Thread Details

This years edition of Costco KS private label single malt is available in some stores in MA. Price $44.99 per 750ml bottle. It is aged 20 years and sherry cask finished. Seems like a great deal for the age for fellow SDers. If you've tried it, please share some tasting notes here.
  • Costco Item Number 650728
  • You usually don't need Costco membership if you are only buying liquor. At least where I am, no surcharge either, you pay the same as us members.
  • Due to state liquor regulations etc, some Costco liquor stores are operated by independent liquor/wine shops that may/can not carry Costco KS private label products
  • Call your stores ahead to verify availability if in doubt

Macallan was shown as the distillery in last year's version but the price was about twice as much. This year they might have gotten this from a different Speyside source.

Cheers.

I bought both, but only tried the 20 yo this past weekend.

I am not a big Speyside fan (like Highlands better), but the 20 yo is definitely better than the usual 12yr Speysides I have had - latest one I can remember is Cragganmore. 20 yo is more defined and worth the buy or two.

However, I personally would not buy case(s) of this thing to stockpile. Not worth it. But maybe a Speyside fan sees it otherwise.

Will let you know when i taste the 15 yo macallan, but wont be until this weekend.
Great thanks. Yes, please come back and post your review. Eagerly awaiting the results!

just came back from the mountain view costco. 5 or 6 pallets left of the 20 year kirkland. Wanted to pick up the 15 year kirkland/macallan but didnt see any.

would also like to know your impression on the 15 vs the 20.

Anyone else taste test both?

Just picked up 15yr Kirkland Macallan which just landed at my local Costco today. Limit is 4 per person. Store only got 10 palettes and they were flying off the shelves. Saw like 3 people buying 4 of them each. Guy said that they will be sold out tomorrow. These things are high in demand and most people who like single malt wouldn't say otherwise.

Already got 6 of 20yr Speyside. Now just need to find some time to drink it.

Even if that is true, that it is Macallan, that doesn't change my review of the product. Call it what you like, it's not a very interesting Scotch, which leads me to believe it's not Macallan. I can only call it like I taste it, and I've tasted a lot of different Scotch over the years. What I tasted, regardless of what it's called, does not want me to go buy more than one bottle. I'd rather spend $10 more and get Highland Park 15 or even spend $10 less and get Glenlivet Nadurra.

If it was what I remembered Macallan 18 tasting like, I was prepared to go back and get a case. I really wanted that to be true. Unfortunately, this smacks of Glenfiddich, which means it's merely break even to me at this price. YMMV.

It's also possible it's a Macallan experiment gone wrong and they dumped it on Costco rather than risking it under their name, but I'd be surprised if that's true. No Macallan is this dull or if it is, count me as unimpressed.
Nadurra for $10 less? where I am, Nadurra is about $60, often more. So that's $15 more than the 20 yr KS. I understand prices vary by region. And thx for sharing your review.

Just came back from Kirkland, WA Costco, and they easily have 200 bottles on the floor.

Bought one because of the hype here. Cost $59.99. Thanks to WA outregeous tax, comes out to be around $78.

Cracked it open and tried it.... Its allright I guess. I am not a scotch drinker so I dont have anything to benchmark it againts. Definitely can taste the Oak. Smells nice Smilie

Scotch is definitely the slickdeals fad of 2012. I've read more about scotch in the past few months than in the whole time I have been on here.

2011 definitely belonged to vibram five fingers and vitacoco.

My opinion of the 15 yr sherry bottle is good, but not great enough for 49.99 that I would replace it as one of my fav. sherry bottles. I'd rather spend an extra $10 for something like auchentoshan triple wood, much better.(though it may not be fair to compare ) Don't get me wrong , I enjoyed the 15 yr Kirkland, and glad I tried it. Those are my thoughts considering I'm in CA, where we have great prices & options for scotch.

I got the 20 yr bottle, but it'll be awhile before I'll get to it. I usually stick with the 12-16 years. This would be my first trying a 20 yr old bottle, so not sure how to compare. I think it's definitely worth a shot for that price / age. What some people dislike, others may love.

Enjoy ~

From a non-snobbish, non-expert scotch drinker...

Just tried the Macallan 15. I like it. Not as strong a Sherry flavor as the 20. A little truer to the traditional Speyside. I feel like its a bit smoother than the 20. Personally, I would pick up couple of bottles of each favoring the macallan 15 slightly.

Just a quick question, I'm not a whiskey drinker really (single malt or blended) but my brother is. Every Christmas I buy him a bottle of the Glenlivet 12 yr which is his preferred guilty pleasure (he looks forward to it now every year LOL). I was thinking about stepping it up a notch this year and have seen these two Kirkland bottles at Costco (20 yr and 15 yr, can't remember off hand which was the Speyside but I know only $5 separates them). Which one of these would be the best upgrade for him? Or is it none of these? I know they have the 18 yr Glenlivet too... willing to try something different if it's better, but it's tough for me to judge as it's not my adult beverage of choice.
Had Glenlivet 12 yr and Kirkland 20 yr during dinner last night. The 20 year was a lot smoother going down and I didn't even need water.
