Thread Details

This years edition of Costco KS private label single malt is available in some stores in MA. Price $44.99 per 750ml bottle. It is aged 20 years and sherry cask finished. Seems like a great deal for the age for fellow SDers. If you've tried it, please share some tasting notes here.
  • Costco Item Number 650728
  • You usually don't need Costco membership if you are only buying liquor. At least where I am, no surcharge either, you pay the same as us members.
  • Due to state liquor regulations etc, some Costco liquor stores are operated by independent liquor/wine shops that may/can not carry Costco KS private label products
  • Call your stores ahead to verify availability if in doubt

Macallan was shown as the distillery in last year's version but the price was about twice as much. This year they might have gotten this from a different Speyside source.

Cheers.

As of this week costco is carrying a $15 1.75l bottle of Kirkland Spiced Rum in addition to the $22 normal 1.75 Captain and $27 Pyrate 750.

The Pyrate was a big hit but it's a bit pricy compared to the Captain, and the Kirkland got raves from those who tried it at our party after the Pyrate was killed off.

At $15 a bottle I bought a few to try out, including one to leave at my Sister's house since they don't normally stock rum. It's a fantastic deal, I might prefer the taste of captain but mixed up with coke it was pretty damn smooth,

Had Glenlivet 12 yr and Kirkland 20 yr during dinner last night. The 20 year was a lot smoother going down and I didn't even need water.
Agreed. I had a glass on Christmas with my brother of the 20 yr. Impressively smooth and enjoyable. Scotch isn't my drink, but I could enjoy this.

This is BS. Johnny Walker Blue rules.
No need to hate, drink your overpriced Jhonny, drink what you want to drink. Cheers!

I have a bottle of Kirkland 15 from last year. I'm going to try it side by side with the 20 later.

Blue for 127 is a pretty good deal. I've never had it before. Is it really worth it?

And does anyone know how long the Oban sale goes for?
Personally I think anything above Black Label = marketing. Been to a tasting and tasted most of the mainstream JW. You should go to one of those events instead if you're interested in trying it

How do you think these would compare to "The Kraken" Spiced Rum I see adverted on the TV so much lately?

$127 is a pretty good deal on a blue. if you can afford it go for it otherwise i would pick up a bottle of lagavulin, oban and chivis 18 for a few dollars more. the chivis 18 taste close to the jw blue but definately not as smooth but at $37+/- it a pretty good deal too. all the discounted scotch at costco are good deals. the oban is a about $43+/-.

Just because its a 20 year single malt doesn't mean its worth a damn. It just means that its not blended.

Blended booze is usually blended for the predictability of the flavor, and while its not as good as the best malt in a series, its better than the worst. A house brand at a place like Costco won't be a super high quality single malt, and it might be on the lower end of the scale. Its up to y'all if you're going to spend $45 on a bottle of this, but you might be happier with a bottle of the blended brands you drink on a more regular basis.

True it could be on the lower end, but my personal opinion after trying one of the two bottles I bought is this on the higher end of single malts.
Am I an expert, no! But I have owned or tried numerous singles near and above this age.
For me it was a SlickDeal.

So, you haven't tried it, but wanted to make sure your authoritative opinion is heard...

I haven't had the Kraken yet, I hear it is good.

Costco/Kirkland have to be getting this spiced rum from someone tho, maybe it is rebadged Kraken? Anyone who has both want to compare?

No, I just wanted to offer an alternative viewpoint to a popular misconception.

Fair enough, and TBH I'm glad to see house brands that are high quality for good prices. My post was intended to correct a popular misconception that all single malts are superior to blended scotch brands. Blending is done for predictability not normaly due to inferiority.

Here in S.E. Florida the supply is diminishing. 2 out of the 4 stores in my daily travels have run out of stock.

Just picked up three bottles from the Costco on Morena Blvd. in San Diego. They have about a 100 bottles left from what I saw.
