Thread Details

This years edition of Costco KS private label single malt is available in some stores in MA. Price $44.99 per 750ml bottle. It is aged 20 years and sherry cask finished. Seems like a great deal for the age for fellow SDers. If you've tried it, please share some tasting notes here.
  • Costco Item Number 650728
  • You usually don't need Costco membership if you are only buying liquor. At least where I am, no surcharge either, you pay the same as us members.
  • Due to state liquor regulations etc, some Costco liquor stores are operated by independent liquor/wine shops that may/can not carry Costco KS private label products
  • Call your stores ahead to verify availability if in doubt

Macallan was shown as the distillery in last year's version but the price was about twice as much. This year they might have gotten this from a different Speyside source.

Cheers.

How does this compare to Woodford Reserve? I'm just starting to pick up on taste for whiskey, and so far Woodford Reserve is my favorite. I can't really describe how it tastes, but I sure like it.
This is a really good scotch, but scotch is a very different creature than what we as Americans call whiskey. If the woodfored reserve is your favorite whiskey and you have $50 to burn on booze, I recommend you go buy a bottle of angels envy. The creator/master distiller of the woodford reserve dreamed up angels envy in his spare time. They basically take a great whiskey and finish it off in port barrels.; it's a great cobmo that is so incredibly smooth. While its not a single barrel, you wouldn't believe this is a mixed batch.

My praise of angels envy aside, this is a great scotch. I was apprehensive about opening mine because I wanted to wait for the right occasion. I just happened to decide today is the day. Honestly, it's a great bottle. I will share my angels envy with my guests before I share this, and that's saying a lot.

I did read all the posts! LMAO Someone asked a Costco wine employee and they said Macallan.
Even if that is true, that it is Macallan, that doesn't change my review of the product. Call it what you like, it's not a very interesting Scotch, which leads me to believe it's not Macallan. I can only call it like I taste it, and I've tasted a lot of different Scotch over the years. What I tasted, regardless of what it's called, does not want me to go buy more than one bottle. I'd rather spend $10 more and get Highland Park 15 or even spend $10 less and get Glenlivet Nadurra.

If it was what I remembered Macallan 18 tasting like, I was prepared to go back and get a case. I really wanted that to be true. Unfortunately, this smacks of Glenfiddich, which means it's merely break even to me at this price. YMMV.

It's also possible it's a Macallan experiment gone wrong and they dumped it on Costco rather than risking it under their name, but I'd be surprised if that's true. No Macallan is this dull or if it is, count me as unimpressed.

I hear it goes well with grape soda. nod
According to the bottle it is best served over ice.
lol really? I was just joking on adding soda to this just to stir up some convo, though I do enjoy jacky d's or crown with coke. Maybe i'll give grape soda it a shot sometime - unless you're pulling my leg Stick Out Tongue

There's a macallan 15 yr Kirkland for 50 dollars at Costco oxnard.

Edit there is ALSO a 45 dollar 20 year old scotch for 45 dollars.

The 15 says macallan the 20 has no named distillery but both are bottled by Alexander Murray.

I believe NC is one of those states that make you buy your booze from state-run stores. I could be wrong.

Thanks, I think you are right.

I'll be in WV too, but no costcos there. I live in Ohio and have other family in PA, neither of which sell liquor.

I bought both, but only tried the 20 yo this past weekend.

I am not a big Speyside fan (like Highlands better), but the 20 yo is definitely better than the usual 12yr Speysides I have had - latest one I can remember is Cragganmore. 20 yo is more defined and worth the buy or two.

However, I personally would not buy case(s) of this thing to stockpile. Not worth it. But maybe a Speyside fan sees it otherwise.

Will let you know when i taste the 15 yo macallan, but wont be until this weekend.
