Thanks. She's been on Dasuquin for a couple of months now but the last week or so has been limping around a lot, sleeping more than usual, and just seems to be in pain.
The vet prescribed Rimadyl awhile back but after all I have read on the internet about it, I'm scared to death to give it to her.
I have one that I don't give it to (she takes Prednisone and the two do not mix) but my other dog has taken it without incident for short times. I might be leery of giving it for the long term unless he was really old.
My older dog (she's almost 13) has terrible arthritis and hip dysplasia (along with Addison's disease, hypothryoidism, and maybe hemangiosarcoma, but we're not doing a biopsy on the apparently bleeding tumor on her spleen to find out for sure). She's on a pretty hefty dose of Tramadol (for pain), and she goes to hydrotherapy and acupuncture so she can still walk. Last year, she had gotten to where she couldn't get up off the floor on her own, and was having a lot of trouble trying to walk, but she's still very energetic and happy, so we're keeping her walking.
She also takes fish oil (it's anti-inflammatory), glucosamine (I'm not sure it does anything for her honestly, but I give it anyway), and I sometimes give her turmeric, which is also an anti-inflammatory. I mix about a teaspoon of turmeric (from the bulk spice aisle at the grocery store) in about a tablespoon of coconut oil, add a little bit of black pepper (it's supposed to increase the effectiveness of the turmeric by about 1,000) and give it to her.
I tried turmeric capsules from RA a couple years ago and didn't notice a difference, so I stopped giving them, but about a year later, even with all her other therapies (she also takes some herbs and we've tried a couple different Chinese herbs to see if they helped) she just seemed to be dragging. I tried the turmeric again, and it really seemed to help her. It can be messy though, and if your dog is a puker, it stains the carpet horribly (I'm so glad I don't have light colored carpet- she got sick from another med and threw up).
