Here's the sales pitch:
Nook HD has the highest display resolution ever for a 7-inch tablet at 1,440 x 900, besting the 1,280 x 800 display of the Kindle Fire HD. The Nook HD is a bit lighter in the hand than the Kindle Fire HD, too, and it comes in an attractive shell casing so that when you hold it, you don't get fingerprints on the front of the glass. The Nook HD will cost $199 for an 8GB model and $229 for a 16GB model. Both come with expandable storage options, so you can stick an SD card with up to 64GB of content into the device (this is not available on Kindle or Nexus.) The Nook 9" Nook HD+ has 1920 x 1,280 display and can play movies in 1,080p HD. It's also nice and light, at 515 grams. For reference, the new iPad weighs 652 grams and is noticeably heftier. Nook HD+ is the lightest full HD tablet ever invented. Nook HD+ will cost $269 for a 16GB model and $299 for a 32GB model (less than corresponding Kindle models.) Both also come with the option to expand your storage with a microSD card (again not available on either Kindle or iPad.) |

It runs ICS and can be rooted/run google store. Barnes and Noble is also really good with updates and has a lot of extra features to make the device more family friendly versus other Android devices. The Nexus 7 also doesn't have a rear camera making your comparison highly suspect. It does have a foward-facing camera for skype that's rather mediocre just like every foward-facing camera, but this camera sucks and is useless for anything other than Skype. Lack of GPS does hurt but Kindle doesn't have it either and I doubt anyone expects it from an e-reader tablet. So the nook has a better screen, expandable storage versus the Nexus 7 which has the cleaner OS, a little better speed, and less locked down experience. IMO, tablets are about their screen and the high resolution makes a big difference. I also hate being locked out of removable storage (Don't get me started about how awful USB OTG is as a solution; a tablet should work in its complete form without ugly stuff hangling off it). You can use a 64 gb micro sd with the n00k. Previous nooks have been mildly difficult to root/run custom roms on but once they figure it out, you have a powerful tablet. This is a good tablet for the price. I'd put it up there with the Nexus 7 depending on what you're looking for. Even out-of-the box it's a great family device given the extras B&N put in the device. |

Front camera is VERY important, and is a deal-breaker for some people. Why do you want to buy a tablet which can not do video conference? Tons of kids games also use front camera for interactive playing. Nexus 7 $199 is for 16GB version while Nook HD $199 is for 8GB. Rooting Nook and installing a CM10 is not as easy as you think, esp to average Joe. Let alone there is no decent CM10 for Nook so far. As to OS upgrade, Nexus is always the first batch to receive upgrade, while Nook may never have any OS upgrade at all. |
