been a andriod user for 2 years now and I love the platform but I have one specific requirement that is drawing me to get the new ipad.


I got a lot of technical manuals and books in PDF format that I want a good/capable reader for it. The other options I tried (eink reader. doesn't render color/format in usable speed, have to constantly zoom in and out because of small/low res screen)

the closest thing I got was the Asus Transformer TF700 (10" 1920x1200 resolution) I got yesterday. it's fast enough to render PDF and have high resolution and large enough screen where I don't have to constantly zoom/scroll.

But today I just compared a PDF file from my TF700 to my coworkers Ipad 3rd gen (retina display) and the Ipad look MUCH better in terms of screen color vibrance. the extra resolution of the ipad really make the PDF text sharper and easier to read. so I'm thinking of getting the ipad (though it would suck to have to buy apps all over again since I have tons of android apps already)

Shes not technical so I can't bombard her with detials but perhaps a fellow iphone/ipad owner can answer some quesiton for me.

1) Can I just connect usb ipad to any PC and drag and drop files to it ?
2) Do I HAVE to have Itunes to get files or apps to the ipad? (basically have it appear as a storage device upon hookup with no software installation)
3) does it have a file browser where I can just go through the file system?
Unfortunately from primary googling it appeares all three of those are a No (at least without some form of work around of some sort)

I basically want to drag my files (pdf, pics, music, video etc.. . ) to the device, browse to the folder.. tap on the file and have it open up in it's associated app.
Don't want to deal with extra software installs.

I bought a 32Gb refurb ipad 3 for 469.00 (no tax) off ebay. It was I believe either from Apple or an auth retailer as it came as an Apple refurb with new case, new battery, and 1 yr warranty. It was on the 5.1.1 iOS.

I had to jailbreak it to enjoy it. Otherwise it was going back cause navigating to associate files could only be done through itunes and was a pain. For instance when I wanted to see which of the 5 video players I had would best handle 720p and 1080p .mkv files you basically had to put that file into each player to try it out (taking up 5 times the space).

Once jailbroken that's not the case. There is iFile and iFilebox that let you copy /paste to varying degrees. No reason to believe that would not be the case with .pdf format. Not sure if you can use .ifile or ifunbox unless jailbroken.

I do not believe iOS is set up with a file browser of any usefulness otherwise.

I still have itunes as I back up using it to my PC.Never going to send any of my data to a 'cloud' .One day those servers are hacked people are going to regret that. It may only happen once - but that'll be once too much for me. Anyway. To each their own. I think itunes removes apps on and off the ipad better than iFile or ifunbox. Apps. Not data. The other two handle data -like .pdf and music and videos - just fine.

The retina screen is amazing. I went for storage vs. processor (on the price vs. the newer ipad 4. No regreats but if you feel that 16GB is more than enough for you then - and only then - I think you should consider the newest ipad. I put 20 Gb on mine within two days so that wasn't going to work and I did not want to carry round wifi 'extra' storage to compensate. Did I say the screen is amazing?

The Transformer you have is the only Android I considered (much more useful than the Nexus 10) but wanted that screen. The amazing selection of apps was also compelling and tipped the scale Apple's way.

If you're looking for high resolution, the Nexus 10's resolution is almost 33% higher than the ipad. The ipad 4 has 3m pixels, the Nexus 10 has 4m pixels.

1) No, you will ALWAYS need to use itunes to transfer files and that itunes will have to be registered to your account, that means you can only register 5 computers. It's not a simple drag and drop like USB flash memory functionality.

2) YES. See #1, even when jailbroken, you still need iTunes.

3) No, unless you jailbreak it. However, IOS file manager are no where near as functional and user friendly as Android file browsers.

I suggest trying the Nexus 10.

nothing against nexus 10 though.

i honestly had no interest in it at all and always thought that it also had just the full 1080p resolution.
now that i kno its actual resolution..interesting..

and with that said, i too agree that theres absolutely no reason to get this fail tablet over the nexus 10 lol

Lol none of the above. This is the main reason why I dont own an ipad, it limits you for the sake of simplicity.
To answer your questions:
1) You cant drop files to it like an android. You cant store any random file you want. It needs to me the apple criteria (music, apps, etc).
2) No need for itunes. All the app work can be done through the ipad. If you need files on your ipad you can have them stored on the cloud. You can email them to yourself. Or some apps allow you to access and keep the files on the app itself.
3) No such thing as a file browser.
Most people just use icloud and "pages"

Although the Nexus 10 is a great tablet, this is thinner, has microSD expansion, better battery, better cameras, and 32GB (vs $499 Nexus 10).

never seen anyone brag about any 10 incher tabs cameras. they are all subpar regardless of their tiny difference, unless its HP touchpad horribleness we're talking about.
battery life is negligible as well in most cases unless you're factoring the extra battery in by the dock. the SD expansion though, as we all know, just something to deal with if you go with any nexus. nexus 10 does have 32gb version btw.

Right, but this is cheaper than the 32GB N10. And there are people who want SD expansion. Just pointing out some reasons why people would want this over the N10, which is a great device in itself.

This is one of the best android tablets out there. Not sure why you would call it a "fail."
