Here is what is posted directly from corporate on the Banana Republic FB page in response to people having to make a purchase:
Please give our Customer Relations team a call so we can find out the location of the stores you visited. You can reach us at 1-888-BR-STYLE and use the voice prompts for store questions, then in-store feedback. Thanks, Chris -BR Customer Relations
Per their FB page, directly from corporate, there is absolutely no purchase necessary.
Picked one up in Richmond Virginia store. Asked for one at counter and was given one, no questions asked. I'm somewhat concerned about validity, as it looks like it is a double sided color copy of a voucher. Can anyone else describe what they got?
Was at Aventura Mall here in South FL and asked the first store clerk I saw. She said I needed to make purchase, it was one per person, and it was not valid at AMC theaters. That's what she said. I was going to buy and later return a bracelet but decided the free voucher wasn't worth it. Will go back and ask the counter clerks since I'm still at the mall.
Update to say that I lined up at the cashier area where they held the vouchers. They had it in a basket in the middle of the cashier-only area. There didn't seem like much inside that basket. I got up to a cashier and stated I was there for the movie voucher and presented her the BR facebook post about the vouchers being free. I guess she didn't believe me because a lady was walking by and she confirmed with her and the other lady mumbled something and she seemed like she unwillingly gave me one. I asked if I could get another one for my mom who was in the store with me browsing the racks. The other lady seemed agitated and said my mom would have to get in line to get one. So stingy and mean. Other people in a similar situation would've been nice and given me one more. And just FYI, there was nobody waiting when I got my mom to line up for a cashier. In the end, I got my mom and lined her up and got a new cashier who looked like he just started his shift. I told him the same thing I said to the first cashier and presented him the BR facebook post. He was about to confirm it with another cashier but she was busy on a phone call that just came in asking about the movie vouchers so he just reached into the basket and gave me one. Those cashiers seem so uncertain about giving me the voucher for free even though I showed them evidence. But I'll be grateful I got the vouchers. I was about to leave the mall empty-handed until my mom dragged me back to meet her friends so I sat on a bench waiting on her shopping and decided to check this thread to complain. Good thing or else I would've missed out on the vouchers.
Just lined up for the cashier and asked if they had any tickets left and got one. They didn't seem very nice about it but whatever...
I feel ya. Same here.

If stores are saying it's only free with purchase, take out your phone and show them the Banana Republic official Facebook account. It states on there that no purchase is necessary. While they're reading that post, mention that people are being asked to call corporate with the store number of any store that is forcing you to make a purchase to get the ticket.
