I had bought for the exact price from amazon few months back. Without jailbreak I could not use it much and finally sold it to a friend.

I have Gen 2 ATV which is jailbroken.

If you want to stream your videos, I would recommend Air Video app. You set it up as a server on your desktop and run it through your iPad (required) and then Airplay it to the Apple TV. Works like a charm for me and doesn't require JB.

I would recommend Plex for a media streamer, it's the prettiest and most feature rich media platform I've seen that has support for quite a few clients out there (android devices, roku, ios devices, PC, Mac, etc). You can do cool things like watch a movie on one devices and continue where you left off on another.

It's probably worth spending $30 more and getting a Boxee Box. A much much nicer product by way of capabilities and remote control.

I have two 2nd generation Apple TVs which are jailbroken and i cannot stress how awesome it is as a media server. If you have your "own" media content all you need is Plex. While $85 for a 3rd generation is a fantastic price, not being able to jailbreak it makes it almost worthless, unless you enjoy renting movies.

I'm actually looking into the Sony Google TV (NSZ-GS7). It's $200 but it can run Plex natively, stream 1080P, and it has an internet browser (Chrome) that supports Flash video.

Not too many apple tvs turn up. But scored plenty of games for the kids via it.
