Nice find! But the 830 price isn't THAT slick ha but for those idiots that kept saying they will sit till the price drops to $1xx this is one of the okay prices you will now have to live with as they are going more and more out of stock . Glad I got my 256 830 when it was $160

This is a good deal. I bought the 840 250gb on black friday for $139.99 + Free shipping (no tax in CA). I would have just as quickly bought this for the Asassins Creed 3.

FYI to all those people talking about performance numbers between 830 and 840....the difference is so minimal. On paper it might look like a big deal, but face it, were talking 0.5 seconds of boot up. Who cares at that point?

I really want that 830 but just can't bring myself to pay $180 for it.

Also bear in mind that the gap is almost non-existent when you compare the 840 500GB to 830 series, as in the 840 non-pro series the larger the drive gets, the more the speed increases for the write (the reads remain the same across the board), so the 840 500GB drives perform the same as the 830 on a few tests and better on most other tests.

All things considered though, I would still probably get the 830 if size and prices were equal (would choose the 840 pro with the same conditions applied). Being said, the prices aren't so I have been running the 840 500GB drive for the the last month and it blows away the Corsair Force GT it replaced (and yes I can feel the difference, but I do perform lots of reads and writes, moving data, and constantly opening and closing multiple apps at once (I am a QA consultant, so I test and trouble shoot networks and devices for a living and am not the usual user, like my wife and kids are, and they don't notice much difference).

I am not worried about the speed as much.

The reviews say the power consumption is more in 840 vs 840 pro series. How much difference could this make to laptop battery life.

I would say it is a not an issue to worry about. The gain you would achieve from going SSD or HDD is more of an impact (and that usually only amounts to about 30 min on the average). You could do the math and try to figure it out, but that would not be totally accurate either as it would have to be figured based upon constant usage or constant idle and your usage will vary, I would be confident in saying it would amount to at max about 5 minutes difference between the two, and that is stretching it in my honest opinion.

The deciding factor I would say should be the cost, performance speed, and the warranty.

For the most part no. It might help in the loading and deleting of files that are stored on the drive, but if you are using the BR drive most, then no difference would be noted. Also once things are loaded you are mainly running off of the memory (and background loads). The comments from those whom have done the swap have found there was not a noticeable difference (except in initially transferring the games to and from the hard drive during installation and uninstalls and that was the only noticeable difference). It is not a worthwhile upgrade as it wasn't designed to utilize a SSD or any of the benefits (such as TRIM and Garbage collection) so it could actually end up killing the drive quicker.

I would recommend to save your money at this time. My $0.02.

Would be in if this was with far cry 3! Never got into AC though.

Bought the 840 and planning to sell the Assassin's Creed game to make the SSD cost $120ish which I think is a pretty sweet deal

No one cares. I think it's something about the reliability of the 830 is better due to a different type of flash or something. And probably also because it has a good reputation of being proven fast and reliable drive.

If you wanted fast the argument could be made that the Vertex 4 is faster, despite a lot of people complaining about their drives failing and OCZ's poor customer support. Just my two cents.
