Can you link to a decent hand grinder for a coffee press? |

I remember the main nitpick I had with the travel press: when I had a chance to see a few presses that my friends owned, it seemed like the plunger was made with a very inconsistent quality. There's a silicone ring running around the oustide of the plunger that sits in a little groove cut into the plunger. That groove is not always cut in the right spot, causing the silicone ring to be off center, and letting a lot of grounds through into the coffee that would normally be plunged down. |

Hario has a couple of other models that would also probably treat you right. Check out my Africa Mission Trip Blog [esgmissions.org]. July - Aug 2010.

I have one of the Bodum brand French Press and it has worked flawlessly for years of daily use. I can and do use *ANY* type and consistency of grind with it and it still works. Pour it out slowly and stop before you get the last part that will always have bits of the grind in it.
My model is borosilicate glass with a black plastic shell around it. I use it in the microwave oven to get the water boiling. Thus I could never use one with a metal shell. Frankly, if you ever broke one, you are being careless. No, that is not meant as an insult. Stuff happens. But I babay mine and as I said, it has lasted for years already. It cost me $30 at Target. |

There are lots of plastics that resist heat safely. Some can even be used in an autoclave that hospitals use to disinfect surgical equipment in safely. (An autoclave is a massive boiler.) So if I had to guess, I would say it could probably be put in the oven for hours without a problem. But it only needs 8 or so minutes in the microwave to get the water boiling. I hope this helps. Perhaps someone with more knowledge can tell you what type of plastic is used for this sort of thing. *Edit* Here is one I found that looks almost identical to the one I have. Mine is Bodum brand, other wise it is identical. You remove the top entirely along with the metal rod and filter, add the water and put it in the microwave until it is boiling and remove it to add your Coffee and/or Tea. Then you stir it up and wait until it is ready and put the filter back in and slide it down. It saves you the trouble of pouring boiling water into the French Press. That would eventually get you burned badly. It is perfect. https://www.bodum.com/us/en-us/sh.../1552-01US Last edited by OmniNegro; 12-07-2012 at 08:37 AM.. Just to give you guys a reference point, I've owned two Bodum presses, both of them being the model with the all-plastic exterior with the same glass beaker used in all of their models of this size.
Assuming it remains the same beaker, I had one issue of the beaker breaking without any external force (hitting, dropping, what-have-you). It cracked along the bottom without my notice, and eventually broke in twain. Since it was the same price to buy a brand new one instead of just the glass beaker, I went ahead and did that. Have not had a problem since. I really love the Bodum press, and French Presses in general. I can only assume this very similar model is no different. Well worth the cost. Cannot speak for the travel press. I feel like that's an incredibly niche product. I generally just brew up a batch and dump it in a Zojirushi thermos. |
