Thread Details

Sooooooo, I recently realized that Autoslash is basically dead. I don't really want to comb through every single coupon code out there. Is there a site that goes and identifies the best car rental option at the moment using all the available coupons/rental companies? I understand that it wouldn't cancel and rebook the appointment, just trying to see if there is one that tells me the best option right now.

TIA

Ya, they suck Frown - let me rephrase. Their booking service seems to suck. I can get a better deal with the coupons listed to the left on the main page...

The first coupon code I found on-line alone saved me $50 for a week over their quoted price. Just checked again as well.

Try http://zalyn.com. This sites combines the best possible coupon for the criteria. If you sign-up and update your profile it uses those to add additional member only coupon.

+1 for zalyn. Been playing with it for a few days now and for the most part, I like it. I've figured that the best way is to

1. As onlythebest pointed out, signup to see additional coupons(basically member coupons like AAA, AARP, Costco, etc). Even if you don't have any, you can still qualify for the frequent flyer and rewards program options as they're free to sign up.

2. After you enter your trip info and hit search, it asks you to enter current rates. Feels like a stretch, but is well worth the extra effort. The coupons are sorted more accurately and you end up saving time trying out more coupons.

3. The travelocity compare button shows you the discounted totals with 5 coupons at a time. Pretty easy. One thing to keep in mind is that you need to look closely at the total amount in the price matrix. Some coupon discounts are reflected in the total and not the daily rate.

Thanks.

I'll give it a shot. So far 2 coupon codes aren't valid for my trip dates, another requires the physical coupon (which I don't have) to be given at the time of the physical rental, and the 4th estimated $288-$346 and it came out to $398 which is $50 more than I found it for by just going to www.costco.com...

5th link - coupon not good for date of rental
6th link - estimated cost $360 - actual cost $452

Grrrrrrrrrrrr, where's Autoslash!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never actually done Priceline but maybe I'll just book a refundable reservation now and then try Priceline or keep my fingers crossed that Hotwire or Costco get a better price.

Sorry, it didn't work for you. I noticed a lot of coupons don't work during the holidays and long weekends. If you don't mind sharing, when and where are you looking to rent? I'd be interested in comparing the options. I just learnt that Capital One has a car rental booking service that offers pretty good discounts and I am going to try it out.

The estimated total on zalyn is confusing as hell. I don't even pay attention to it. From what I can tell, it is the sub-total (not including the taxes). The difference you're seeing is probably the taxes.

+1 for bidding on Priceline closer to your rental date. I've had some luck with this.

Who knows, I may just need to go through some more links and probably check next year. Most coupon codes I see are only valid through 12/31/2012 and I imagine more will be available after Y/E. I'm looking for a car at LIH - 2/22/2013 -> 3/3/2013

I saw you were looking at LIH. Did you try their Hawaii page - http://www.carrentalsavers.com/hawaii.html? They seem to have different discounts on each page. I usually try several pages depending on my rental. With a little effort I can almost always find a really good price. Plus, most discounts do expire at year end so I would check back mid Jan.

I didn't check their Hawaii specific page. Thanks for pointing it out. Will definitely look more in January.

I don't know any specifics whatsoever but I've been to Hawaii and rented cars a bunch of times and you are almost always better off waiting until you get there, if possible, because there are local coupons and a great competitive local scene. if you can't wait because you need a car at the airport, suggest trying the local paper online, or finding the local equivalent of the "What's going on in Hawaii" tourist-type brochures to see if you can get coupons out of them. and don't forget the local companies...

Holy crap, that was definitely better than what the other site gave! $289 on the Hawaii page vs. $436 cheapest option on the normal page and $463 at the same company!

Thanks for the great suggestion!

Wait, whaaaaaaaaa? I had to do something else and when I came back the $289 option wasn't available anymore...

Ok, now it's back. I just realized that it's not using a coupon code but rather a corporate ID of CONDO IN HAWAII 2 for Thrifty? I'm guessing that is legit (as in I'm not going to show up and they're going to say the corp code isn't valid for me)? I made a reservation but can always cancel if needed.

Autoslash is basically dead. Really? Can you explain? Last time I used it (6 months), it was great.

Try and make a reservation. The site is up but it can't ever find any available cars. Something about the parent of a few of the rental companies not allowing them to book reservations or something.

Just used Zalyn to get a good deal on 10 day rental in New Orleans. They kill you with taxes there but I saved about $300 using their search tool (and USAA discounts). Reps to you!
