Actually, it is true. Just because one wireless unit can detect another wireless unit doesn't mean they can establish a usable link. Wireless is simply radio waves. Ask any ham operator if he can transmit to someone just because he can hear them; the answer is no. It's a lot more complicated than that. The power to transmit does not equal the sensitivity to hear.

My brother lives 3 houses away from me, I gave him my WPA password to use my connection but he can only use it in his upstairs bedroom. If I got this for him could he get a better signal and use my connection throughout his house?

This is a great product, it increases the range by a lot... I was about 20 feet from my router and got 3 bars, now i get 5 bars from all the neighbors.
picked it up for 10 bucks last year.

Right. There is a reason that people do wireless site surveys for a living. What is the distance? What type of physical interference is there? What is the noise on the spectrum from other APs, cordless phones, etc. There is no way to answer these question through the internet. I wish there was but wireless takes either a lot of fancy equipment or lots of trial and error to see what works best.

i will offer this tip. Rather than buying a bigger antenna one solution is to buy a USB cable. The signal loss over a three feet USB cable is nil and is minor 2-3DB over a six foot cable. But moving the Alfa up or down or left or right by 3-6 feet might improve your reception far better than a bigger antenna will.
