being new to plasmas i got this tv and was startled by how much better it was compared to my 2008 samsung LN40A650 LCD. the colors are just leaps and bounds better than my LCD, the blacks are darker, and overall its just great if you're going for the home theater. HOWEVER, the deal breaker is that if you are using it for home theater use, 1080p/24 sources are played @ 48Hz. the 48Hz feature flickers on bright scenes rendering it useless. too much horizontal tearing during the 3:2 pulldown at 60Hz for the 24p sources, so i've pretty much given up on this TV.

i'm trying to get my brothers to play halo 4 me so i can get $75 off best buy and combine that with my 2 amex cards for another $20 off, and buy the samsung PN51E700 for $800.

you are asking a bit much of a base plasma TV
You are better off with the Samsung you mentioned

I too have a Samsung A650 from 2008...that I now use as a monitor
You will find significant difference in the newer higher end Samsung LED's televisions as well

BUT..your TV from 2008 will still stand up well against many of the LG' LED's that have been on SD recently in both color reproduction and black levels....in fact it would not surprise me if your TV is not better than those

Though you probably paid more than $1000 for your 40" back then as well

granted if you to touch the TV..plasma vs LED..it would be cooler

But...if the heat from a modern plasma changes your temp in the romm..then you must be in a room about the size of the TV

And I wont even get into picture quality differences
Especially some of the LED's that have been listed here on SD recently......not anywhere near the top of LED picture quality

i agree with you 100%. but, i don't like buying big items like TVs/computers etc every 2 years. that samsung will be kept until it dies. i think its worth the extra $500 to get a much better PQ for something i'll be keeping for a very long time. but then again, i'm pickier than most.

most of my colleagues at work could care less and just want something big with decent PQ. this is an AMAZING base entry TV, but i just thought i'd let the SD community know that if they're looking to do blu rays with this, it might not be the best idea.

fwiw, i haven't noticed any considerable heat generation from this unit. i've even looked for the heat generation and can't notice it. i was hoping it could double as a heated for the cold winter coming to boston...

the PQ on this plasma will smash any LED/LCD in the sub $1000 range, the only concern might be brightness of the TV and of the room this plasma goes in.
