cheap deal but you have to send for the ants and they don't send them in the winter time. My kids would be dissapointed.

Why do ants need to be shipped? Are they special ants or what? Or is it that you can't just grab the workers outside?

Had one of these as a kid and it's not nearly as cool as it looks. What's missing from the photos is that all the sand that is pulled out to form the tunnels has to go on top. So the little "farm" on the top gets sand all over it. If your kid wants an ant farm just use a mason jar. It's 100x easier to get the ants in. Just remember to wrap black construction paper around the outside of the jar b/c the ants wont want to tunnel on the edge if it's exposed to sun light.

 Uhh. No thanks on the Tarantula raceway! I can imagine that thing racing somewhere we can't find it. That would go over real well with my wife. Actually... now that I think about it... I had to get this ant farm! I had one when I was younger and it's time to show the kids. They'll be interested to learn how the ants die off slowly one by one and the others who are alive drag them to a graveyard that they create somewhere in the kit. It's true - sad, but really interesting to watch. Hmmm, I might set up my camera kit to try my hand at some time lapse. Sometimes it's important to understand exactly how much you don't know.
