The rod/reel is really just the beginning if you want to catch anything, or more like have better chances of catching anything.

You'll need hooks - and depending on the location you're fishing and what you're fishing for, you'll need probably about 3-6 types just to start off.

You'll probably want to reline that reel because the one that it comes with is likely either old, super cheap, and full of kinks and waves. You'll also have to replace it after about 5-10 trips, depending on where you go (fresh/salt, rocky/smooth, type of fish that are biting, etc). That can cost you anywhere between $3 for about 300 yards and up. I have line that costs about $10 a spool for about 150 yards, which is not at all considered expensive.

You'll definitely need some sort of weight to sink your line. Otherwise it'll just float. You can get bobbers and whatnot, depending on what you're fishing for.

Then there's bait or artificial lures. That's really the most expensive part that gets used up quite a bit.

Oh, and a license to fish of course. That all depends on where you live and what the laws are there. I used to fish on the pier in SoCal and back then it was free.
