I signed up for the AMEX $150 off the 599+ Dell purchase a few weeks back (expired December 31), but didn't buy the gift cards. Seems like a good time to pull the trigger, but I what's holding me back is if the PSU can be changed.
But are there any XPS owners who replaced the PSU? Since, I would like to move my 460ti with the 600watt psu to this system |

Most of you guys are speaking another language to me, but here's food for thought for another XPS 8500 from Costco. No idea which is the better deal, but I do like Costco's generous return policy (90 days for computers gives ample time to see if it's the one for you). PSUs are easy to be replaced and should have no issues doing so. I just wanted to know why some said you couldnt use the $150 off from Amex?
Stole someone's signature. But you will agree

BTW, how does I made a mistake translate into for the hassle of using the wrong code, which you did? Congrats on the deal, but gloating doesn't endear you to the masses

Also want to make sure you guys are aware of a $100 off practically any Dell Desktop or Laptop $899 or more: 144VZ6QP3FKX1S
The OP deal isn't bad, but I also suggest looking at the Dell XPS 8500 Special Edition (also the deal of the day) if you want a gaming PC. I was upset earlier this week because they had the Alienware x51 i5 chip and GeForce 660 GTX for $800 and when I tried to order it they removed the 660 GTX as an available option for the i5 model. It was perfect too since I wanted Windows 7 and thought that with the $700 I got from the AmEx/Dell gift card deal, it would have netted out to about $600 or so for this beastly machine. Unfortunately, they stopped selling that configuration However, today I ordered the Dell XPS 8500 Special Edition for $1000 + Tax + Free Shipping and thought it wasn't bad for gaming (even though I really didn't want Windows 8). For $350 more than the core Dell XPS 8500 listed in the OP, you get the following: Windows 8 3rd gen Intel Core i7-3770 processor 2TB SATA Hard Drive 7200 RPM + 32GB SSD SRT enhancement 16GB Ram Nvidia GTX 660 Blu-ray BD-R, DVD+/-RW Drive Seemed pretty fully loaded to me even though I didn't care for Win 8 or the Blu-ray drive. Add the GTX card for $100, then use coupon code 144VZ6QP3FKX1S to knock it back down to $1000. After AmEx sync/Best Buy gift cards we're looking at about $750 for the Dell XPS 8500 Special Edition before taxes. |

there's not a ton of room in this box. that's where there's a problem with changing the power supply. if you're planning a purchase around the ability to swap a psu, you probably should do some very precise measurements to be certain what you have in mind will actually fit. i know some people that swapped a psu on this, others tried and had a problem. just not a lot of room in this box.
this isn't a bad computer; the fellow calling this "crap" somewhere above is perhaps a bit too passionate about it all one of the biggest downsides with this machine is Dell's new(ish) policy of not including OS disks and license numbers -- instead your license # is printed in the BIOS of the machine. that creates a good many problems, not the least of which is major headaches migrating to a different OS if you're unhappy with Win 8. I've seen some Dell community threads where people are tearing their hair out attempting to migrate from Win 8 down to Win 7, or trying to migrate their OS to an SSD. Seems like to do it properly you have to pretty much plan on losing altogether whatever part of your purchase price was for Win 8. This is one definite area where veering away from pre-made machines would be a plus. Build your own, you buy or otherwise acquire your own OS disk and license, and you can install it freely. In this regard, Dell is limiting people in a major way.

I did have to break off the tab that holds the power supply cables, but it fit just fine. |

650 for this aint no deal what the crap. plus taxes?
unless you really desparately need a prebuilt system right now and eligible for amex offer. that said, i have my $700 dell GC sitting next to me that I bought for $455
do you eat poop?
I like to swim in it |
|
And tot he other guy, if you can build a custom pc you can do better than these deals pretty much any day. Not tryign to stir the pot too much, but its true. If you ccan't/don't want to touch it, then that is where these pre-built systems come in, but again, most people don't need an i7...or i5 for that matter! |
