Well I don't do iTunes at all. I have a Macbook Pro but NOT impressed and only need it for Final Cut. I just bought an iPhone but now wish I had gone for a Galaxy SIII and still may. So this device probably isn't for me.
I'm a pretty hardcore custom PC builder, but the tight integration between Mac laptops/mobile devices with Apple TV is really slick, and pretty hard to beat from the standpoint of getting great functionality with minimal setup time.
I own a Sony Vaio S laptop (would have gone Mac but I wanted an IPS display for <$1k) and was shocked at how poorly Microsoft's Windows 8 to Xbox Smartglass implementation is. An Xbox 360 *should* be able to do everything that a tiny Apple TV does, and it *should* be able to easily mirror my laptop's display, yet it can't. And the xbox interface is so.... damn.... slow!
Obviously the real competitor to Apple TV is Roku, which is substantially cheaper. But if you have pretty much any Apple laptop or mobile device, the additional functionality Apple TV provides makes it a worthwhile purchase.
How about streaming your movies to a TV or doing the editing on a big screen?
Apple TV is pretty slick, I really like it.
I have an old Roku now and it's about done. So looking for something else to purchase. When people say the Roku has much more content, what all are they talking about? There are many useless Roku channels. For me at least. I assume Apple TV has the main basic favorites: Hulu, Netflix etc. Plus it has MLB.TV. What content does it actually lack?
FAQ - Does the Apple remote work with the Apple TV located behind the television? Answer - Yes, the remote works normally. The infrared (IR) emitted from the remote bounces off the wall behind the television and then hits the Apple TV's sensor. As a result, placing the Apple TV behind the television is actually a great way to collect the infrared emitted by the remote. It is a little like using a huge baseball glove to catch a baseball. (The side of the Apple TV that connects to the power cord must face the floor. This way, the infrared sensor will be oriented upwards to receive your remote's signal.)
I was going to call BS on this until I read the reviews. You learn something new every day...
