A magnet salvaged from a dead hard drive will accomplish the same thing. Having said that I got one of these as a gift and I like it better than a plain magnet because it does not leave any marks on the walls.
The built-in level can be useful too.

I am somewhat embarrassed to admit my blondeness -- this is obviously NOT what I thought a "stud finder" would be.
Hehe, sorry for the disappointment.

Here is a great stud finder that works on both metal and wood and it's only $3.99 shipped and no tax.

As the person above said for metal studs a neodymium magnet from a hard drive or a large magnet from a dead speaker will do the same thing.

just use a strong magnet . . . . that is the best sd you can make yourself (will never break)
I laughed when I read this, I have been using cheap magnet for years, and yesterday I was hanging microwave and the magnet fell on the ground and broke.

This thing is amazing. Magnet is super strong to find the nails in current studs. This works better and quicker than my bulky laser stud finder. I used this to redo my baseboard and casing and it is incredible how quick and easy it is to use and find studs.

I have this but sometimes I wish I had the other type (with sound and/or light) that allows you to locate edges on metal studs. I had to borrow one when I really needed to use a stud finder.

BTW, I paid $10 on Amazon, so this is a good deal if this is something you are looking for.

This thing is worth it for >$10.00, I bought one about 3 weeks ago and while its an admittingly low tech item its a nice overall package and worths better than just a bare magnet.

These things are fantastic. This magnet is WAY stronger than your standard magnet, and it doesn't leave marks on your wall. The built in level is a nice feature too. Definitely worth having one of these around the house.

In 4 1... Slightly too late though, just mounted a LCD TV using a laser stud finder and went to HomeDepot to pick one of these up just to double check the laser one (I hate putting holes in my walls) but they didn't have any... $7 for peace of mind is well worth it
