Isn't the whole idea of power conditioning to decouple input AC and output AC by converting it to DC (battery) between the two? If normal power does indeed come from a DC to AC inverter, than doesn't the device inherently do what most of us consider AVR? If the input stage voltage spikes or sags, the AC to DC rectifier will simply draw less or more amperage to supply adequate DC current for the battery and output inverter, no? I have a very loose approximation of understanding how power conditioners work, so I could be wildly off base here.

something like that but not quite. this UPS does not do AVR and does not seperate AC Input and output. the charging circuit charges the batteries in parallel and only feeds the inverter when voltage limit (high or low) is reached. until then the ports are powered by the mains. when power fails or drops or rises above configured voltage it switches over to battery power fast enough to maintain AC power to the connected devices. |

You're thinking of a true Online Double Conversion UPS which will probably run thousands of dollars. This model sounds like a Stand-By UPS which just passes through mains AC whenever the power is within acceptable parameters. When the input gets outside those parameters it switches to (stepped wave) battery power. AVR is also seriously misunderstood by people. It simply adds another level between straight pass through and battery power. If the voltage is somewhat high or low it will boost or trim the voltage by a constant percentage (which varies depending on the design). Frankly I don't think this is as important as some people think. It's really only useful for people who chronically have moderately high/low voltage. Also, most cheaper consumer units today only include one boost mode. Many of them don't have any trim modes. Anyway that's my understanding of AVR. It is possible I'm wrong but I've been working with and researching UPSs for many years. Also the part about this deal that concerns me is the weight. It's only 26LBS. That's only half the weight of my old APC Smart-UPS 1500. I bet this thing has very small batteries. They seem to be combining smaller and smaller batteries with larger and larger inverters. This leads to very short run times (at high loads) and short battery life spans. I really do not like this trend. Last edited by MWink; 12-10-2012 at 12:44 PM.. Reason: Added info. |

As I said before, we ran into this during the 9 day power outage last year here in the northeast. We tried running a server through an enterprise rack mountable APC UPS and it went kapoof! From what I found out, if the unit goes above or below a certain pre-set voltage threshold it will basically just switch to battery. It will not, however, power anything 100% of the time from battery, only the "online" units do this. However, even those units are not guaranteed to run off a generator. Short of getting some massive natural gas powered generator like google, ebay, etc run I never did come up with a solution. Last edited by brbubba; 12-10-2012 at 12:41 PM.. |

Yes, seems the skeptics are correct. From TFM:
General Information Overview The APC by Schneider Electric J Type Power Conditioner protects audio-video systems from power spikes and surges. The J Type has noise filter banks, which reduce electromagnetic interference to ensure the best picture and sound quality. The unit also provides clean and safe power to connected equipment in the event of a power outage. Sounds like a bare bones USP with a magnetic choke on the cord. Still, its got to be better than feeding my AV right out of the outlet. |
