The D5100 kit lens is still a 3.5 -> 5.6, same with the 7000. Unless the bodies are doing something magical with the processing, I wouldn't expect great low light shots out of them either. |

Isn't the 899 deal from adorama better? On Amazon 40mm pancake lens is $150 roughly, the 18-135mm is over $400. The pancake lens is rated highly, and for the ability to video zoom with very low noise the 18-135mm is good.
18-55mm won't get you very close to the object in real life situations, I feel the 135mm helps in this regard. There is value in the versatility of the lens. And, when more sharpness is needed, you can put in the pancake lens (or sell it and get a 50mm f1/.8 for a bit over hundred bucks). |

Obviously if you get a Canon 17-55 f/2.8 it will beat the Nikon kit lens, but that is another $1,000.00 USD. Canon makes great cameras, but its sensors lags behind Sony/Nikon in image quality / low light at the consumer levels if you test fairly with similar lenses. |

I have been watching these camera deals unfold since Black Friday. I was wondering would this be a good opportunity for a newbie to jump into the DSLR game? I have previously only owned point and shoots but really want to pick up a new hobby. I have always wanted to get into photography but never had the time or money to do so.
Now that I am out of college I have a bit more time and can spare the cash to get into the game. So overall, is this a good "starter kit" for an inexperienced newbie? Thanks guys. |

Thanks OP! Great price. Pulled the trigger.
I was eyeing T4i for a while, though I have T3i. The main selling points for me are 9 auto-focus cros-points, continuous focusing in video, and (somewhat important) higher ISO. All those things (i.e. the lack of those) were really getting me with T3i. See if I get 5% cashback with Discover. Interestingly enough if you search for T4i on BH.com you will never find that deal. Price mistake? Last edited by reminor; 12-10-2012 at 11:53 AM.. |

You do not want to purchase a either a Canon or Nikon blind and decide later that you want the other one - then you are probably stuck with a lot of useless accessories/lens tied to that particular system. |

I'll say again, though. I ordered last night - after people have been saying they're back-ordered - and got shipping notification today. I think the bundles with the 18-55 lens may be back-ordered because of the popularity of the original $699 deal. If you're looking for the STM package for $899, I'd still give it a try. |
