Regarding VG-Max on shun knives, here is the reply shun posted on their facebook page in regards to my question about the steel
"Shun Cutlery-KAI USA Ltd. Hi, Raymond! So glad you asked about this. Actually, VG-Max is a step up from VG10. It's the next iteration of VG-10 "super steel." It has additional carbon for strength and durability. Additional chromium for wear and corrosion resistance. Additional tungsten for a fine-grained steel that takes a super-sharp edge. More molybdenum for corrosion resistance and strength. More vanadium that promotes carbide formation so the edge can be very sharp...and more cobalt for improved strength. We are slowly transitioning to this superior steel. So you got one of the good ones! It's definitely NOT AUS8A. Does that help? We will write more about VG-Max on our Shun blog and let you know on FB when the post there."

It's definitely normally made of VG10...just look at any of the listings on Amazon.
AUS8A is a lower price steel. In reality, most people probably won't notice the difference. But still uncool to make a price reduced version and try and pass it off as a great deal. |

Yes, normally it is VG-10, with 32 layers of steel over the core. This looks to be AUS8A with 16 layers. Yes, definitely bad Shun!

it is most likely a typo, i've bought a lot of classic knives off amazon, labeled as a lot of things, but they always came as vg10.

Sometimes amazon descriptions are wrong, but I don't think that is the case on this one.
