Giving a gift of gold

coins would be great. options abound. you can go the ebay route.... generally lower cost (e.g. closer to spot) but .... it's ebay. I've ordered from APMEX many times, but there are other sites. Be aware that unless you pay by bank xfer, most places will shift CC fees to you (2-3%).

How to i buy a bunch of coins that add up to $500? Should I go to a dealer?

Gold is about $53 per gram at current spot prices. So for $500 you're looking at less than 10 g or about 1/3 ounce at melt value.

Point is you can't really buy "a bunch" of gold coins for $500 unless they're something plated which no one wants anyway.

You also have to remember that the smaller the fraction of an ounce, the more premium/markup you'll pay over spot. For example, a $5 American Gold Eagle (1/10th oz) sells for around $200 and a $10 AGE (1/4 oz) is probably $475. So that's $2000 and $1800 implied spot, respectfully. That's just one example. Gold comes all kinds of shapes and sizes.

the economy is in pretty bad shape I'd expect gold to go up.

Could always do something like that and maybe a bunch of silver coins

For $500, about the most you can get is one gold coin the size of your thumbnail.

Make sure the person receiving it understands exactly what they're getting because it may not look all that impressive at that size. Somebody who doesn't follow gold closely could easily see a 1/4oz gold coin and think it's not worth much, or perhaps confuse it with some kind of "collectible" coin from TV that's just coated with gold. In other words, if you give $500 worth of gold make sure they realize that, as obnoxious as that sounds.

i know nothing about gold coins but one guy has the Krugerrand 1oz gold coin 1977 uncirculated for $1660 with free shipping. this seems like a good deal right? does it matter what county?

one more question...do credit cards give cashback for gold bought on ebay? on a $1700 coin its $17...not much but better than nothing.

Silver coins are prolly a better option. The price of gold and silver are often very closely tied together, but silver is much more affordable. For $500, you could prolly get 14 1oz coins.
