That is actually incorrect. It has a 20GB SSD but in a different format. It is built into one of the boards which actually contains the mini PCI-e for the wifi card. You cannot replace or even remove the 20GB SSD unless you find the part for the S3 with a full 128GB SSD installed which will have that PCI-e card without the SSD built in. The 320GB HD or 500GB HD built in is in fact a 7mm 2.5in drive and can be replaced with an SSD like the Samsung 830.
Even if you replace the HD with an SSD the SSD cache cannot be removed unless you find the part from a S3 with a 128GB SSD preinstalled. Hard to impossible to find.
Yea...realized that after I looked over the tear down pictures again. Guess I'll just go with a bigger main SSD.
5 1/2 hours isn't that bad. I'll be happy to get 4 though.
First, TU for the deal--overall good value for the $$$.
...glad 4 hours will satisfy you, because that's about what you're gonna get. My i5 2nd gen S3 gets about that. (Using it right now.) You can get 5+ hours w/ display at lowest setting and wifi & BT disabled.
Actually, my only gripes are the 2x usb ports and where they are positioned (on back.)
1. My usb mouse nano receiver always occupies one, which means I have to use a 4x hub on occasion (for example, usb drive + charging phone or 2x usb hdd.) Likely pick up BT mouse soon, but activating BT's gonna cost a little battery life.
2. All ports on back leads to unnecessary motion when adding/changing usb devices (makes a noticeable difference); plus puts pressure on device connectors/port if I'm not on a level surface -- out of sight, out of mind (e.g., I've bent a couple of flash drives.)
Might want to check your Walmart clearance. Last time I was there...they had a slightly older S3 (non-touchscreen...Win 7) on clearance for $275. I snagged the nicer i5 version up from Staples on clearance a while back for $250 after tax. Love my laptop...not a big fan of the clicking action on the trackpad at all times but gestures make up for it.
Ditto that. My gf got an S3 with similar specs for about $330 the day Win8 came out. Although she likes the size the mouse is painful to use. You can't get near it without it clicking for you.
