The Hobbit: Or There and Back Again Collector's Edition (Hardcover) $8.50

I still cant believe they are making a trilogy movie from this short book.

I have both and strongly recommend the version on sale here. The annotated hobbit is poorly laid out and very fussy to sit down and read--I hate it. It has entire sections on Hobbit reviews and advertisements. I'd sell it back but it's not worth the bother. Of my 6 editions, the 70th is my favorite and my go-to reading copy as well.

This 70th anniversary version is printed on beautiful thick paper, has crisp large text and contains the Hobbit as Tolkien intended. This is a book made by and for bibliophiles. If it were rare, you'd see people spending fortunes on it.I bought it used for $4.

A Tolkien fan of any level would love to have this. The 70th is rivaled only by the Folio edition. The larger text in the 70th makes it easier to read though, and the paper stock is thicker. The green leatherette cover and slipcase make it look like it's sourced from a hobbit's house, and gives it a wonderful texture to hold.

Basically: buy this while it's cheap.

edit: yes, this is completely unabridged. It's the full text laid out as exactly as Tolkien wanted, but never lived to see fulfilled.

Also, the Easton Press version looks nice, but no Tolkien fan wants $350 worth of books with giant Harry Potter font running down the spine.

Picked this up for $15 a couple weeks ago and was happy, great price here. It's a really nice looking book.


To be fair, they are also using some of Tolkien's supplemental material, so it's not just the tale from the Hobbit.
