Not sure about the third gen XPS, but the previous Generation XPS weighs in at under 3 lbs and looks much better than this Sony. That said I hated the keyboard on the XPS and since that is one of the most important parts of a laptop, I returned the XPS.

I'd also consider Vostro 3360 as someone else mentioned on this thread. It has a better keyboard/trackpad (subjective) and comes in at the same price range and weight..No fan issues or overheating either

It is $ 100 cheaper but looks like dell has has better battery life? It seems to be based on reviews I've seen. Sony though has build in sd reader and ethernet adapter. I am really torn up between this deal and dell. Help please!

how are open box items from newegg ...it says "Newegg only guarantees your receipt of the Open Box product with the purchase of this item. Any accessories MAY OR MAY NOT be included. Can it have no charger ?? the i3 version with 4GB ram plus touch screen is only $540 (no rebates )!!

I'm not a fan of recent sony laptops as I think their quality has dropped. My dad has an E-series which is about 2 years old and the mouse button fails to register unless you press it very hard. Unfortunately, the buttons are soldered on the motherboard so there are no contacts for me to clean.

My 4 year old VAIO SR is doing great after cleaning and reapplying thermal grease every 2 years.

battery life on this one isn't that great, and probably behind on the industry average.. but i like the build quality. it's also the 3rd gen i5 vs. the 2nd gen i7 on the xps. i think the i5 3rd gen is almost equivalent to the i7 2nd gen and that one is probably the outlet version right?

It is Just ordered yesterday with the rebate deal

if the xps is an outlet laptop, i prefer the sony. i don't know how good the XPS line is though.. it does seem a bit overpriced.

this is not really ultrabook. This ultrabook cum notebook.

Other ultrabook are very thin and better quality than this.

I agreed with you. I had 2 sony vaio Z series and quality of those were amazing. Now i have Samsung series 9. I was looking for vaio z series that time but too much price starting $1900.
Samsung series 9 has better quality and very portable.

Thanks. After some thinking and researching I decided to stick with Dell. Better battery life. No reported issues with fan noise and ssd vs hybrid. Also I don't want anything with windows 8 (that's a separate issue) and sounds like downgrading Sony is a pain. I never buy into an OS at least until SP1.
