Multipurpose means it can be used with different types of fires.
ABC extinguisher is the most common and means the following: A: Ordinary Combustibles (wood), B: Flammable Liquids (gas), C: A or B fires involving electric components.
A extinguishers are rated 1-40, a 2A extinguisher can put out twice the amount of fire as a 1A and so on.
B extinguishers are rated 1-640, and this indicated the sq. ft. of fire it can extinguisher
C extinguishers do not have a numerical rating.
Extinguishers which have plastic handles are not refillable. The general rule is you need a metal extinguisher, like what you would see in a school for it to be serviceable.
If a real Christmas tree catches fire, there is no point in battling it with a little extinguisher like this, just call the FD right away.
Not sure any other differences and too lazy to research I suppose. Maybe refillable, metal handles, etc.
Looks the same to me. Much better deal IF you can pick it up. No shipping option for me but I have one a few miles away. Rep'd and
Also you could sell one for at least $10 or more if you only need one.
How freaking ironic... We had a fire in our kitchen yesterday and used this exact fire extinguisher to put it out. Worked like a charm but made a huge mess. I'd rather have a huge mess to clean up than the entire house burn down! Great product!
if you're to the point of using an extinguisher, i'm thinking some stuff would already be destroyed
It's 10000X better then having your house burn down and you, the bonehead, with no way of responding. BUT, anybody who has ever used a dry chemical extinguisher knows it leaves a HELL of a mess on everything. A nasty, corrosive mess. Kiss anything in range that is electronic good-bye, whether it was involved in the fire or not.
Expensive ? You Bet ! But, how much collateral damage might you do with a dry-chem unit if you need to let fly near your stereo equipment or in your computer room ? I have an old Halon 1211 unit (yes, the BANNED one) near a room full of very expensive electronics. Using a dry-chem unit in there would lead to tens-of-thousands of $$ in damage.
I am not a SD employee. I do however rent several homes, and I am proud to say I use Kidde products in every one of those. I trust them and I love the brand.
Maybe before you accuse someone you should PM them first to get your facts straight!
Facts?! This is the Internet! Everyone knows everything, and everyone's a detective! We make our own damn facts! If he says you work for SD, it must be true!
I still have an old halon extinguisher that I believe is illegal now.
so I will probably buy one of these deals - costco/ home depot deal
For personal use they are not "illegal" per-se, you just can't buy Halon 1211 anymore since it's a human-threatening, earth-destroying, tool-of-the-devil greenhouse gas (the horror). (Actually, you can buy it if you're made of gold, they just don;t make it anymore - all available Halon 1211 and 1301 has been recycled.)
If the unit still is "in the green", keep it - Halon 1211 extinguisher are some of the best around. If you don't want the evil greenhouse gas in your house, send the unit to me,

Well, you could go buy a halon fire extinguisher right now, as long as you don't mind dropping a lot of dough. http://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/product/12062 Probably not the only place, and almost certainly not the cheapest, but it's there (and I happened to know from prior experience that they sell them). I don't know how much trouble you'd be in if you used it at home and were "caught" by the FD, though, if any.
