How can I force my Sprint Evo 3D to roam on Verizon's 4G network?

RUsum1 9,543 1,696 December 16, 2012 at 09:46 AM More Sprint Deals
It is ridiculous that I'm being charged $10 per month for "premium data" when I can't even use it. How can I force my phone to use Verizon towers so I can actually get 4G service? My entire state doesn't have 4G from Sprint yet for the last two years they assure me that they are working on expanding the network. If only I could tell them that I'm working on getting them the extra $10 per month...

won't work for several reasons first if your phone has a signal from Sprint it will use it, also your phone is 4G WIMAX and Verizon's 4G the 2 don't mix

I did check out that Roam Control but I think it charges (although I don't know how much the cost is). My phone does have 4G. I got it briefly while on a layover in Chicago. No 4G in my state though and Sprint is idiotic and seems to think that because the device has 4G I should be charged an additional $10 per month for premium data even though I can't use 4G since there are no towers that broadcast it.

Verizon only uses LTE 4g? Which is not the same as Sprint's 4G? Are there any carriers that use the same 4G as Sprint that I could try to roam on? My phone doesn't have a 4g signal from sprint because of what is mentioned above (my entire state lacks 4g from sprint) so that shouldn't be an issue. But I want to force it to roam anyway which I've read that some people do when their Sprint signal is very weak but a Verizon signal is good.

it's $4 - if you don't want to pay, head over to XDA and look at what you would need to do in order to force roam manually - it's not that pretty..

Sprint was the only major provider to ever use WiMAX; and they are working on getting rid if it too. Software cannot force the phone to use a network it doesn't have a radio for.

For over two years they have "been working on it"...at least that's the load of crap they feed the customers as I have yet to even get to use that.

So doing it manually won't even help me if what the above poster said is true. That sucks.

you would get access to Verizon's 3g, which may be a bit better than sprint's 3g

Or they just pocket the money and increase charges again to celebrate. I've been promised 4G is just around the corner for two years now (ever since I got the LG Optimus)

Your phone uses WiMax for 4G. No other cell companies in the US deployed WiMax, so there are no other 4G networks you could possibly roam on. Sprint is also switching away from WiMax to LTE, so if you don't currently get 4G WiMax you never will, Sprint isn't expanding it any further.

Also, the $10 fee is now a "smartphone fee" and applies to all smartphones, not just 4G ones. That doesn't necessarily make it right, but don't feel like your paying for 4G and not getting it because you'd be paying that extra $10 even if your phone didn't support 4G.

Roam Control will let you roam on Verizon's 3G network. Well worth the $4 IMO

Verizon uses 4G LTE with the 700mhz band.
AT&T uses 4G LTE with 800mhz (and 1700/2100 in other areas)
Sprint uses 4G WiMAX (your phone), old - 2500mhz band, which no other network supports.
Now Sprint is deploying 4G LTE (new, not your phone), but using the 1900mhz band.

So even if you got a new Sprint LTE phone, you wouldn't be able to roam LTE on any other network anyway.

Yes I forced roamed all the time on Verizon's 3G network with my Evo 3D. Faster than the crap speeds I got on Sprint's network.

I did do it however to be let out of contract ETF free, so be cautious with force roaming, they will terminate your service if you use it too much.

Also newer Sprint phones I believe use only Verizon's 1X network. You'll need a Sprint corporate PRL to be pushed to the phone for Verizon 3G access. PM me if you need it.

When I had an Evo 3D, I would set the PRL to 00001 and that would be on Verizon's network. Way faster 3G than Sprint would ever have.
