squaretrade is reputable, and phones are tricky, because they are cheap subsidized and expensive out of contract and many people break them or drop them in the toilet.

However you don't need warranties for TVs. And for tablets if you keep in the house you really don't need one unless you take it everywhere or think you'll drop it in the house, either way always get a case for your phone or tablet. You're right, mechanical failure is low, it's screen damage.
