Thread Details

If you receive one of the Amex Rebate Card, is it possible to get cash on it? I understand the card can not be used on ATM, but I wonder if any SDers know a creative way to get cash? If so, how?

Or if not, can you use the card to pay credit card bills? Big Grin

Thanks.

Just to add more data points to this process, I just requested a combined bank transfer of two Tigerdirect prepaid reward Amex cards. I was told the cards had to be first suspended and then a refund could be issued.

The rep needed my address, bank name, bank routing number, bank account, and the prepaid card details.

The call took less than 20mins, was given a reference #, and told it should take ~14 business days.

Been on hold for over 20 minutes now getting passed around trying to do my first check request... Too much John Mayer hold music!

The initial hold time is often less than 2 minutes if you call late at night. They're open 24/7 so pick any odd hour if you can.

zero hold time on a sunday afternoon, most of the waiting was for the claim to be finished. $330 being mailed to me!

did it again for the second time! saturday morning, 0 minutes of hold time, and processed within 5 minutes. AMEX customer service is the best of all the financial companies, with maybe the exception of Discover Smilie

I just found this thread and hallelujah! Finally a way to get rid of those rebate cards before the monthly fees kicked in. I called the number on the back of the tiger direct amex reward cards and asked to have my rebate cards consolidated and direct deposited to my checking account. Agent knew exactly what I was talking about and the process was easy just time consuming. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on hold while they process your cards if you have a lot of cards. Each one will take a few minutes to process. My 14 cards took over an hour. On top of that they have to take down your name, address, checking account info, etc. This is definitely the best way to use the rebate cards. When I used them on PayPal, I ended up with a bunch of small leftover balances, not to mention that pesky $1 pre-authorization hold.

I was told there is no way to consolidate multiple cards. I didn't even ask for check or direct deposit. Should I try again with another CR or directly ask for the manager?

Consolidation is not allowed. Refunds are not allowed for cards issued after 1/15/15. You may have grounds for a complaint regarding the removal of the refund option.

Best solution is a Square reader, they charge 2.75% but you have the money back the next day. Small price to pay for peace of mind.

Argh, I just called to get a refund check for the balance of my prepaid Amex and was told the program stopped offering that option.
