Purchase at your own risk. Onkyo receivers are crap for reliability. All you have to do is look at the reviews. Onkyo is the LAST brand of receiver I would purchase.

How much do I have to spend to get a receiver that will attribute all incoming digital audio to dolby and possibly even convert component video to digital as well?

Here's my review: I've owned 2 in the last 7 years and they are both running just as well as they did the day I bought them. (And, they were perfect the day I got them). I have the 509 and couldn't be happier with the feature set, performance and value.

I used to have one too, but he's referring to the ones from the past year or 2, which have had hdmi issues and the receivers crapping out after 2-3 years.

The 509 is, I believe, the 2011 model and did have some reported issues. I think that with the full manufacturer's warranty, and available firmware updates, this should be a good purchase for anyone wanting to stream music from their computers, Pandora, Spotify, etc. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to one of my friends or family members.

I have the 608 and it has been fine(knock on wood) and I have one other older Onkyo(5XX) still going strong. I still buy onkyo because I have had good luck with them and they are generally reasonably priced. I need a new one to upgrade an aging onkyo that doesnt have hdmi.

I just bought the 609 during the Onkyo sale and noticed it was running hot when I first hooked it up. So I updated the firmware and it has been running much cooler since.

I'm happy with the receiver, haven't had any issues

Pioneer Elite

Spend some $$$ to get a better receiver.

A few years ago I went from an Onkyo 806 to a Pioneer Elite SC27 - what a difference!
The spaciousness of the sound & balance destroyed the Onkyo.

I do have an Onkyo 605 in the bedroom that is still running like a horse. I would buy another Onkyo for my 10 year old sons room, but never for the living room.

How could you know it is "crapping out" after two to three years when it was only one or two years old? Can you see into the future? I think we need to talk about some investments. Wink Stick Out Tongue
