Battery Replacement for Early 2008 MacBook Pro

arjun90 1,214 105 December 18, 2012 at 05:46 AM
My 4.5 year old MacBook Pro is still living strong, however, a couple of days back, the battery swelled. Though I was upset because of the premium I was going to have to pay, I was surprised by how cheap the replacement batteries were on ebay; some listings had batteries with the Apple-logo on it (obviously still fake for such a low price for ~64 dollars). I don't think any of the batteries on ebay are genuinely Made by Apple. I'm not willing to spend $130 dollars on a new battery at the Apple Store. Where can I buy reliable Apple Compatible Batteries? Should I just pay the $130 dollars with my eyes closed. Obviously, that would be inconvenient.
Please advice what I should do. I plan to use this Notebook for another year; Intel's Core 2 Duo processor still lives strong. Thank you.

I would feel safer with Amazon [amazon.com], than with fleabay.

Even on Amazon, there are too many negative reviews / complaints. Unfortunately, its the same as ebay.

You may notice that the original Apple battery also gets the same user review ratings, and it costs 4 times more.

Also, you can return the battery to Amazon within 30 days, no questions asked.
Try that with fleabay.

That's right, but I am also concern about safety and longevity of the battery. Apple's battery has a fire-proof casing, and obviously comes with a 2 year warranty. Whereas 3rd parties give minimum 1 year (on sites like ebay), and many don't mention exactly the battery-make besides the fact that it is ISO 9001 rated, lol. Is there anyone with experience in buying non-Apple manufactured batteries? The price ranges are really crazy; for as low as $20 to as high as $300 (when Apple charges $130). Does any know any reliable sources? Amazon is no longer genuine (marketplace), unless you are buying directly from Amazon.

I don't work on Macs, so have never had an opportunity to buy a Mac battery, but I/we have bought many replacement batteries from Amazon for Windows laptops and there would be no difference between them and the Mac after market batteries.
Most of the replacement batteries perform exactly the same as the originals.
Why do you mention the Mac batteries being fireproof?
Have you ever seen or heard of a laptop battery catching fire?
I certainly haven't and I could care less if a battery is fireproof or not.

The bottom line is that you could buy 4 or 5 after market batteries for the price of an original. How could you go wrong with that?

Well, the reviews on Amazon are extremely mixed with most of them negative. Some of the Apple batteries on Amazon are not made to specification and can pose a problem to the notebook. I am confident it is safe to buy replacement batteries for Windows Laptops. However, Mac batteries seem to always under-perform in respect to the stated specifications according to many reviews.

From my (admittedly rather limited) experience, I would recommend you look for a replacement made by a company called Anker. I have purchased Anker brand replacement batteries from Amazon twice in the past (for different laptops) and have had a good experience both times.

I have no idea as I can't tell what brand (if any) it is. If it were me, I'd buy which ever of these was the correct model:

1 [amazon.com]
2 [amazon.com]

My guess is it's the second, but I can't say for sure without knowing the model # of the battery you're looking to replace.

there are places that rebuild battery units using the original container and electic gear inside.

Interesting; never thought of that. How much does it usually approximately cost? Is it safe? Are lithium ion batteries for laptops this old even available (in respect to size and fit)?

I have an early 2008 macbook pro laptop in my household and the battery is starting to show its age, What did you end up doing?

Sorry for the late reply. I bought the generic battery from LaptopBatteryOne back in December; worked fine 'till this month (the battery swelled due to over heating). Though the battery did have a warranty (1 year), I decided to toss it away and buy the Original MacBook Pro Battery from my local Apple Store. No problems whatsoever now. My 2008 MBP is still running strong in its mint condition.
