FWIW, I used to prepare my taxes myself every year when I was a student then when I was married. Then, we had our DD and several other things happened that I decided to go to a tax pro (got a ref from my FIL). He found deductions (real ones, not trumped) that essentially paid for his fee (like $100ish). In the years I used him, I always used TurboTax and TaxAct online - I'd enter our info in the forms just to cross-reference if refunds (or owed) were comparable. In fact, that's what drove me to a tax pro in the first place - I ran our stuff through TT and TA and both were telling me we owed $2k (long story).
FF to now and I just don't see the point in using a tax pro unless you have a complicated situation or had a lot of odd events happen in one year. you know that liability for your return falls on YOU PERSONALLY, regardless of who filled it out, right?
Look at the 1040 form (assuming that is what you will be filing). Just go line by line. Everything is actually pretty simple. When I first filed, it looked like it was tough. But at the end, it was very easy.
Just be sure to have all your income statements (W2),
You'll get crazy newbies who call 3x a day for 2 weeks straight, and post argumentative paranoia demanding the rebate is guaranteed, in writing, by certified mail, on their doorsteps, by tomorrow evening. Then all the other newbie sheep freak out, and THEY call 3x a day, for 2 weeks straight, and the paranoia explodes. And suddenly everyone's carting their paper back to the retailer demanding a refund.
All those who CALLED to confirm.... Your dad should have silently slept that night.
Save yourself some money and do your own taxes. I've checked my taxes against all the major programs and they all came to be the same and my situation is slightly more complicated than yours, but not by much.
I'm glad I saw this thread. I've always wondered if a tax (B&M) place would get us more money than doing it ourselves. My situation is different than OP's though. I'm married, own a house and itemize (+ new baby this year).
I know each situation is different, but would the majority say self prepared will yield the same results?
What's an average price to pay to have a pro do them for me (married, house, itemize, new baby) this year?
