i'm extremely happy with my panny plasma. i got the U54 (aka U50) from costco for $550. i absolutely love it for the price. the only downside i saw was that the 48 Hz produces too much flicker, and there is an audible buzzing from 6 ft away. other than that, the PQ is amazing. just flat out amazing. i can't praise it enough. i had an LCD for years, and dark scenes lost so much detail. but not the case with the panny. if you don't care for 24p, grab the panny ASAP.

How long does it often take to receive the dell.com gift card by email? I'm a little scared of committing to the gift card purchase to find that it takes too long to get to me and the tv is sold out. The promo page says a few hours, but has it been shorter for most of you? Maybe even immediate?

just bite now, run slides for 100 hours, calibrate, and enjoy it. it may or may not come back at $500 or $550. i got it for $550 after tax, gas, etc and i'd easily pay another $50 for it.

Yeah, i'd like to start using it in a week and a half when i move, so thats time for me to run the slides between now and then. I'll take your advice

Yes, talking to the guy at Pauls tv, he said panny was 1A, Samsung 1b, and lg was a distant 3rd. I got this tv for $499 at best buy the week before bf price-matching to bjs. I liked it and it had a nice picture and did 24p very well, but black level was not very good. However, i returned it as I was able to score a 55ST50 for the same price locally so jumped on it, and having them side by side you could tell the differences. The LG had a lot of dither, which every plasma has, but it is much more noticeable on the LG and has a weird thing of being blobby if that makes since. Lowering brightness makes it less noticeable, on the lg it did an odd thing of disappearing towards bright areas of the scene if that makes any sense, each point lower on the brightness scale and a band of it would disappear as if concentric circles. Anyway, lowering the brightness i was able to get a nice picture with little to no noticeable dither, but it makes everything black, dim backgrounds become totally black which i did not notice until i watched some of the same scenes i watched on the plasma on an lcd. On the Panny, the blacks are black and you don't lose the background. For instance i tested it with the Rite movie that was playing on one of the premium channels since its dark. There is a scene where they are doing an exorcism or something, and to get rid of all the dither on the LG you can see the figures in the foreground great, and they pop, but everything in the background is black, looks like a night sky, on the panny lowering the brightness to get rid of the dither as well, you see everything clearly, the room, ceiling , the rafters, the fixtures on the doors, all of that information is lost on the lg if you don't want to have a bunch of white/green dots all over the picture. And I had two of the LGs as the first one had a dead pixel and i exchanged it, so it was not something wrong with the set, both did that. Could be distracting at times in dark scenes, made shadows look kind of wavy. Anyway, if i had not gotten the deal i did on the st50 i would have stuck with the lg as it was in my budget and had a much better picture than my LG LCD it replaced, but if you can afford it the st50 is definitely worth it. The same guy at pauls said that a cheap plasma will be better than any cheap led, even high end leds that cost over $1k.
