That's what is holding me back on this purchase. You'll need touch with all those metro apps on windows 8. You can use a mouse or pad, but I think you'll get frustrated without touch.
I love Windows 8, btw. Love it on my touch screen laptop and love it on my home pc with 24" touch screen.
I like Windows 8 without the touch screen. It's pretty cool. I love the way the apps work especially when opening books. Love the live tiles concept. The best thing is that you can tailor the apps to your own personal lifestyle. I got my horoscope, photos, to do list, calendar, news, espn, cookbooks all right in front of me. It's great even without the touch screen. It took some getting used to though at first.

Guys I would wait till next year. Ultrabooks are fairly new this year especially the Asus zenbook with not that many competitors until recently. Once next gen comes out next year with ultrabooks settled down a bit. This baby will drop to 700-800
Next year i will want next year's technology. It will be many % more efficient and many % faster. )))
not sure how this thing is so popular when i posted the ux31, which is pretty the same laptop minus the video card and has a 256gb SSD for $950..
Let's see: your deal is only available in some B&M stores, for $1000 (friends discount is YMMV), and with taxes it's about $1100. This deal is about $1150, no taxes for most, and Discover has 5% cashback for J&R.
I haven't been able to find a good review of the U38DT, but the specs that have been released show a crippled display (1366x768). The U38N looked pretty decent, except there were some fit and finish issues in the video from Ultrabook Review. It's a little thicker than the Zenbooks, but supposedly will be cheaper and better at gaming, not to mention cheaper.
I don't think anyone has really had a hands on with the U38DT unlike the U38N. There is an important thing to note with the reviewed U38N's, and that is that they were shipped with A10's while the initial official release will ship A8's and the A10's will be ship later (as in next year, which isn't very far). The A8's are, as far as I'm aware, about 20% less powerful than their bigger brother. I don't know how well the A8-4550M can handle games though for what I know the A10/A8 iGPU is leagues better than the HD4000 but I doubt it compares to the 620M or any decently modern discrete GPU.
As for the screen issue on the DT, since its the same form and build as the N, you can replace the lower-res screen for that of the high resolution IPS that comes with the N. It will cost you and you need to be at least a little savvy but you're also saving a good chunk of money on the CPU change.
pulled the trigger. she is quite a beauty and i have been wanting to get rid of my laptop for 2 years now. the price is justified seeing that i didn't pull the trigger on another laptop earlier... right?
i totally agree! thanks for the support in my tech obsession!
