Cashing savings bonds tax year?

If I want the redemption of EE savings bonds to be counted for my 2012 tax return do I need to cash them in before Dec 31st or can I do it all the way up until April 2013?

You have to do it by Dec. 31. If you have paper bond you probably don't have enough time to do it by the end of the year. It has to be converted to an electronic bond first, which takes 2 weeks or more. I have a paper bond that I wish I cashed before the end of this year. Unfortunately income taxes are also going up next year too, if we go over the fiscal cliff.

They are paper bonds, however the last time I went to my local bank, they cashed them there on the spot. I'm a student right now but graduating next year and my income will go up since I'll be getting a job so I figure I should cash the bonds out now.
