But yeah, Im in a similar situation. Younger one definitely getting this one; I would get the older one the 7 HD if it would go on sale. Too bad, I might just get him a galaxy tab2 for $20 less than HD
The 2nd Gen Kindle Fire is identical to the HD apart from the screen, the camera, and the speakers.
I'm getting them for my nieces aged 2-6 who don't need cameras, HD video, or loud speakers, and the saving over the HD (40% after coupon) is considerable.

I picked this up on Monday. Used the expired $15 off coupon, which did require an override by the manager but they were really nice about it. With tax $125.99 at the Manassas, VA OD.
I also picked up 2 of the 7" HD Fires from TRUs for $159.99 back a couple of wks ago when they ran that sale--it was in their ad and I had no trouble at all getting them for that price.
Hopefully, the prices on all the Fires will drop soon. I have one from last Xmas that Amazon has now replaced twice b/c of issues with the device. The regular ones are fine for little kids and I think I like last year's version better.
