It's not the price, it's the idea of no auto-shutoff at any price. People are absent minded, forever in a hurry, easily distracted and any number of reasons why this could be left on all day/night.
People need to take better responsibility for their actions. If the thing burns down then it's on them. If they want an auto shutoff feature, they shouldn't even bother to comment and just get something more expensive. I don't understand how someone can complain about a $4 coffee maker, it is what it is for this price.

I don't know of any household automatic drip coffee maker with a metal or glass reservoir. The style in general is not optimal for coffee brewing, so if you are serious about coffee, I would use a glass or stainless steel French press or manual drip cone, and you get the health benefit as a bonus.
Bunn coffee makers have a stainless reservoir , including the home versions ; but you are definitly paying for it .
