The story wasn't bad. It was kind of like a hippie's kind of story, but with a nice twist on it, in an alternate world. The world truly is dying due to the resources being sucked out of it and consumed at a rate at which it cannot recover, to enable advanced industrial (or post-industrial) societies to live in secure comfort. And they are willing to start wars and go great lengths beyond what's considered humane to protect it.
This game pops up after Total Annihilation makes front page. Similar nostalgic talk. I doubt newer generations would really appreciate it. It takes a mind that actively wants to play retro to enjoy it. It was great for its time though. The work put in the soundtrack is a feature these two games share that I really can appreciate, classics. I personally find Chrono Cross to be a sleeper RPG hit from around this time, but too bad it doesn't get too much attention. I still consider Chrono Cross's intro song to be a 5 out of 5 star work. I'd happily bought and still listen to the soundtrack of Chrono Cross, enjoying it far more than any of the FF soundtracks or the Total Annihilation one. thirded. Chrono trigger and FF6 will be forever God-tier legends!! ff7 just has the popularity because it was the one which kickstarted mainstream people to get into the rpg zone. With ps1 graphics and fmv people flocked to it because it was pretty. But story wise, gameplay wise, and speed wise (imo ff7 is slow), the SNES classics were done so much better. PS1 era had very slow gameplay. Just look at Chrono Cross and all the other FF on that system. Those were good games and all but they sure don't age well. It's mostly because PS1 games were first generation 3D games. They were blocky, slow, and long loads a plenty. Story wise it was good but again, CT & FF6 was way better! Starting from FF7 and onwards there was too much emo-ness going on for me. friendly reminder:
remember to tip on the original bill and not the discounted bill. Remember coupons are a marketing tool for restaurants and they [restaurant, not the servers] are the one taking the "hit". Whether the food was discounted or not, the service was the same for the portion of food. (and before you say "No duh!!", you wouldn't believe how many people leave their brain at home when they come to eat ) |

Sounds like the harsh critics that avoid seeing the game's good points simply had a preference to polish vs ambition. They seem to prefer fantasy-like and simplistic stories of chivalry fighting against villainy.
Chrono Trigger had very fine story and was a good adventure, but it severely lacked challenge as the gameplay was very straightforward. FF7 and beyond tried to engage emotion from the players, encouraging you to connect (sympathize/empathize) to the characters, and include some tragedy in the story, maybe giving you a reason to play. They didn't force you on a single path and story either, allowing a few branches, including one that allowed you to revive the lost heroine. The setting is very vivid and well detailed--other worlds may seem huge, but in comparison they seem empty. In FF7, there's lots of scripted NPCs that are doing things and reacting to the setting, rather than simply standing around waiting for curious players to indulge in their dialog; you adventured to indulge in scripts. I understand it can feel awkward or embarrassing to get immersed into the game, but there are tons of memories to be had if you let yourself. I don't quite understand how people say FF7 is the FF that ruined the series. It wasn't really a series in any way besides the title, maybe some production staff, relatively huge budgets, and very minor crossovers/cameos like Cid and airships. I didn't play more than a few hours of 8 or 9, didn't find X or any of the later FF to be my thing, but I didn't own a PS2 and only borrowed one to play a few hours. They seem to be very different stories. FF8 seemed to be more for the romantic types; I see a lot of girl gamers marking it as their fav. Back to the point, FF7 was rightfully huge. Not just huge, but rightfully so due to all the content filling it. It had very varied game play (ex. choco races, sub battles, etc.). Had innovative cut scene and camerawork and use of 3D for its time. Had a decent amount of battle tactics and strategies that granted the standard battle gameplay decent depth and challenge. You cannot deny it. It's $6 for an epic that spanned multiple discs. I don't think I know many who have even completed at least half of it, spending more than 50 active game hours--unlocking limit breaks (ex. that mysterious piano that you can play), gold chocobos, and discovering other secrets adds up to a significant portion of the game. Compared to the likes of Chrono Trigger, earlier FFs and other RPGs, it had true adventure and depth rather than "grinding". When I first played through, I couldn't stop. It was just full of pleasant surprises that seriously impressed me. I honestly couldn't stop talking about it for a while. Playing it again, I probably wouldn't experience half of my original excitement, since I already experienced most of it. To me, it was like it was made for an adolescent, the earlier FFs made for kids, and... well, it required a bit more mature mind to appreciate it, but now that I'm an adult, it just seemed like a passing trend. Tastes change and now I enjoy kiddy games simply as relaxing passtimes that I can drop at any time, and avoid other mature games to avoid the consequences of lack of sleep, due to staying up all night playing.
