I remember getting this game and a Playstation for Christmas in 1997. Brother and I oogled at the AWESOME graphics. Might have to get this and relive the memories. Either that or find my original copy and play it. Smilie

Thanks OP for the memories of Christmas past!

1-6 had consistent game play and theme... (well 6 had glimpses the horror that was soon to follow.. e.g. the train sequence). Also 1-6 felt like you had a new world to explore. 7 felt like a very linear path in the spirit of mystic realm or an early fps. It's also possible I just got old and bitter between 6 and 7's release.
Completely agree with you. The play style just changed between 6 and 7...they fell victim to the graphics hype that has dominated the industry. A similar change, for current RPGers would be the changes between Dragon Age 1 and 2.

I bought this back in '06 to play on my OLDSCHOOL DOS machine with an authentic XG sound card. FFVII was one of the few games to exploit the XG

$35 IIRC

Ironically, this seems to be the exact mentality of Sqeenix as of the past.. decade or so.

remember Bleem! ? They did a pretty awesome job of 3D scaling the graphics from 320x240 to 640x480. Playing FFVII like that was fun Big Grin

i started downloading the 15gb "compilation" but stopped after a playing the vanilla version for about an hour. it looks and more importantly plays great to me as is. i may play around with the mods later on, but for now i'm going for that freshman year in college nostalgia.

Can I download this newer version, and still use the bootleg program?

Ah the game that ruined the FF franchise for me~
Funny enough, It's the one that got me seriously into the franchise. I had played earlier ones and liked them but FF7 consumed tons of hours of my life years ago, I have never been into a video game as much as this one since nor could I ever be again lol. Granted, I think every one since, with the exception of IX, has been total crap.

For what it's worth, the snowboarding was messed up on the original too. Back then I was rocking a PII-333 Klamath with an ELSA Erazor (Riva TNT) when they came with the Colorblind screen calibration software. Man, memories of all the overclocking and sites starting up, looking at benchmarks of G200's Savage3D, 3dfx...

per the instructions on the linked forum, yes you can. however, after downloading and installing you have to convert it to the old file format from the 1998 release. there are step by step instructions.

looks like you lose the cloud sync and achievements after the conversion if that matters to you...
