Was thinking about it until I read there was DRM... Thats a no go. Not gonna REpay for a game I already bought and still have for PC and not be able to install it on multiple machines.

i haven't tried installing on another machine yet, but this is right off the product page from the Square store:

"Whether you’re away from home or simply using a different computer to play, enjoy FINAL FANTASY VII wherever you are. With cloud save support in FINAL FANTASY VII you can continue your game progress right where you left off, all you need is an internet connection."

I've read every post on here and it seems like everyone is mostly speculating and no one has actually installed and played this game yet.

I am installing it now, 55%.

I will let you all know if there really is DRM and how the game works on a modern Z68-chipset system.

Yea I know, that does make it SOUND like you can install it on multiple machines, but then whats the DRM do?

Still waiting for SquareEnix to give it people who own both the PS and old PC version for free.

Can't see a reason to justify spending any money on this re-release when I already own both old versions; even 50% off.

Everyone had diff HP, MP ect so that doesn't make any sense at all. Materia was one of the best systems if not the best IMO. Hoping for a real remake of this game with DLC ect.

Btw, Square had even admitted that they haven't surpassed ff7 with following games and refuse to make the remake until they do.
Materia for me was not the best system:

It just meant that everyone had the same materia at the end after mastering everything. So everyone was simply homogenous at the end aside from the limit breaks. You can also grind out stat things to boost your characters attributes.

Anyways, this game will be remain for me as a good memory.

Why would a port of a decades old game have any trouble running on any system. You could run it on an Intel HD 3000, so not sure why you listed your (mediocre) rig.

Ah the game that ruined the FF franchise for me~
Wow, you're def in the minority on that one. I played since the original myself; saying 7 ruined the franchise is pretty outrageous.

That's because with every new game they've progressed further down the path of "OMG Graphics!!!," "OMG extraneous treasure hunt achievement!!!," and "OMG Emo Asexual Protagonist!!!"

FF7 retained a lot (but not all) of the playstyle that built the franchise with 1-6. They had rock-solid stories that provided freedom but kept a laser-like focus on the overall goal - defeating the main boss. There were no side quests to buy a villa, become a top-ranked guild hunter, etc.The characters, despite having less dialogue than characters later in the series, were well flushed out and players could easily identify with them. I still remember feeling Tellah's rage as he unlocked Meteo against Golbez, or Edward's hesitation fighting the Anna-lookalike enemy and him eventually regaining his confidence.

FF7 is considered more popular than the earlier games simply because it was marketed more and its release coincided with both a new system and explosive growth in the gamer population. I remember playing FF2US (dumbed-down FF4J) for the first time at a friend's house about a year after it was relased. Tried the very next day to buy it, but not a single store had it... I spent an absurd amount of money (compared to the purchase price) renting it until I beat it.

That would essentially mean that all the characters were the same and it wouldn't matter who you would use when clearly that is not the case. Yes, they could all use the same magic, but there is no comparison from Cloud/Yuffie/Tifa to Cait Sith/Red.

What I liked about it is that you didn't have to use a crap character to cast a normal spell.

BTW, Pheonix + Final materia ftw.

I just bought and installed the game.

The game does use SecuROM DRM.

Read the FAQ on SecuROM here if you're concerned: http://www.securom.com/support_fa...c211244851

SecuROM is programmable by the game publisher (in this case, Square Enix) so that it can be very stringent or very lenient. The programmer controls how many times the game can be reinstalled and on what hardware it can be reinstalled.

SecuROM DOES use a hardware hash, though, in all instances, so when you activate the game w/ SecuROM, it knows the specific PC you're installing it on. If you tried to install it on another PC (even legitimately, for example getting a new computer) you may have problems getting it to activate again. It really depends on the type of limitations Square Enix decided to go with.

I scoured the Square Enix website, but couldn't find anything regarding the DRM and reinstallation on a new PC, should you have to. I might just have to contact their customer support.

Further, this is very interesting. This is taken from the Square-Enix website FAQ:

Q. I want to re-download my purchase, but the Download button is gone.

A. There are a couple reasons why you wouldn't see a button (where there previously was one) to download your purchase. If the order is older than 30 days , then the download period has expired.

This would seem to me to indicate that after 30 days, you can no longer re-download your game. What a bunch of crap. I figured it would be like Steam, GoG, or the Blizzard website, where once you buy a game it's added to your digital library for downloading at any time in the future. It appears that may not be true, again... the Square Enix website has literally nothing in their FAQs regarding this.

I guess it's caveat emptor in this case...

Most older programs are completely incompatible with newer OS's and hardware. Up to now a lot of fans have tried running the original and/or modded 1998 release, failing with newer hardware. The OP was just reassuring individuals that might want to buy this version that it will run with newer hardware.

did you read all the posts in this thread talking about the original 1998 PC version NOT running correctly on modern hardware?

as i said before, i noted my specs as confirmation that this release runs correctly. i never claimed to have a super computer. i'm merely pointing out that the game will NOT run at a 300% speed increase as the original version did...

thanks for stopping by

i just installed this on my laptop (installed on my desktop earlier today).

it installed and activated without any issues using the same activation key as my desktop. the game crashes on start up though. not sure what the issue is. i'll mess with it more after i get my kids to bed.

ConfusedConfused
But that is the case. You can max a char's stats to 255 or something by grinding for materials. So that's what I did, which meant that everyone was the same... does that make sense?

I'm done talking about video games.

Materia setup:

Counter=Mime, Counter=Mime, Counter=Mime, Counter=Mime, Counter=Mime, Counter=Mime, Counter=Mime, Counter=Mime

Use Omnislash Limit Break.

Get attacked on purpose....

Most devastating FF turn ever?

Stats:
Omnislash maximum theoretical damage with a maxed out Cloud: 149985 HP

x8 = 1,199,880 HP maximum possible worth of damage.

Correct me if I'm wrong...
