for about the last month twc has been upgrading their $$$$$$$ routers and have bumped up the standard 10/1 to 15/1 in some areas.

if you have a DOCSIS 2.0 modem and standard 10/1 (15/1) you will see your speed with powerboost as it stays on just long enough to trick the speedtest.

if you have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem you will not have powerboost and will see your true speed.

Side notes you can get the TWC discount if you have other internet choices in you area
If your only choice is TWC you are out of luck, they will not lower your monthly service charge.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the "rental fee" they are charging all of the users now, maybe this is a way to point at another "reason" for the extra cost. Bunch of crap but at least it is something extra now.
So is everybody being hit by that mistery fee? I was about to complain but since promo price hasn't ended. I have standard but been gettting 25Mbps in speestest since installation more than a year ago.

I did a speedtest this summer and I was getting 15-25mbs already, so what is the improvement?
Are you on the 10Mb plan? Do you have the modem from TW? If so, it's because of turboboost. Basically they burst you first 10s or so of speed, so speedtest.net result is not accurate.

I noticed the bump from 10 to 15 when I switched to my own modem last month. I thought it was because of the modem LOL. Did some search and read that TW started rolling out the upgrade.

Well just to update I have been running some speedtests since I did the reset and here is what I am seeing.

I don't really like the speedtest.net or the roadrunner speed test because they seem to finish before the "speedboost" drops out which makes the numbers look artificially high (25-27MB/s). I used steam as my test bed and here is what I have

Pre upgrade - 1.2MB/s sustained on a single transfer (500MB update)
Post upgrade - 1.9MB/s sustained on a single transfer (670MB update)

Hope this info helps someone else out wondering if there is a difference, if you see a drop in speed I would definitely complain otherwise no reason not to pull the plug for the 30 seconds and give it a go. Thanks again OP for the info!

Maybe its worth looking into more with people around SD to see if everyone who is paying the rental fee also got the 50% upgrade on speed. Either way I feel you my friend, love seeing the bill climb for no reason...

I see about the same at speedtest but I am also finding that speedtest completes before the "turbo boost" they advertise (that extra bit of speed they give you for the first 10-20MB of a transfer) lets out. It seems a more accurate test is to setup a sustained file transfer with a high speed service (I used Steam in my test, but I am sure Microsoft would be just as good). Find a large update and download it, that number I think represents a much more realistic idea of what you should expect from the ISP.

Sorry OT but what is ping and is it better to be around 26 or 200? Sometimes I get speeds of 18 and sometimes 5. Always upload at around.85 or so. I swapped my webstar modem out for a Motorola 2161.

download a large file and see what you get sustained. speed test may just be showing power boost which is a temporary increase in download speed for like a minute.

btw, to avoid the fee which everyone should be getting on twc, you can buy your own modem. only dowiside is no power boost on your own modem.
