Suspend sometimes known as "suspend-to-RAM" saves your session to RAM (common for closing the lid of a laptop). In this state the computer is still on. But it uses much less power. Hibernate sometimes known as "suspend-to-disk" saves your session to the harddrive (this is also common). In this state the computer is off and uses no power. It takes longer to hibernate and resume than the other kind of suspend. Some laptops use "hybrid" a combination of the two. Most people don't have a need for this feature, but for those that travel, a laptop can essentially be a giant battery pack for recharging their phone a dozen times. To do this the computer must be on (I was pointing out that it can be in suspend, though not hibernate because then it's not on). However some laptops have a "charge" (bad name, I agree) USB port that remains on even when the laptop is off. Sometimes this port is yellow, sometimes it has a lightning bolt above it and sometimes it's not marked. Succesful Steals:

The only version that ISN'T compatible with legacy software is Windows RT, which is only available pre-installed on devices using the ARM CPU architecture, aka tablet computers, aka "totally irrelevant to this thread". http://windows.microsoft.com/en-U...ws/compare |

Would this be worth upgrading to if I sold my Alienware m17x r2, it has a core2duo 2.4ghz gtx 260m SLI (2 cards in SLI mode)? I can sell the Alienware for about the same price to somebody else. I also have a windows 7 ultimate just waiting to be used. Thoughts?
Also would this be worth it or should I just get a desktop? Portability really isn't an issue. |

The confusion in this case is mixing up "Windows 8 [Home] vs Windows 8 Pro" OSes with "Microsoft Surface [RT] (ARM-based) vs Microsoft Surface Pro (x86-based)" tablets. The former is a [small] difference in software and can be easily remedied while the latter is hardware and cannot be altered. To make this even more confusing "Microsoft Surface" used to refer to a coffee-table computer now known as "Microsoft Surface table". You can thank their marketing department. Windows 8 Pro has a few additional features, that is the only difference versus the home edition. On the other hand, the Microsoft Surface Pro tablet has a traditional laptop/desktop x86 processor while the RT ("RunTime") edition has an ARM processor such as in any smartphone. Regarding the media center feature, I'll first remind you about XBMC, VLC, SMplayer, etc and second I'll quote Wikipedia:
