when you capitalized good, do you mean to imply that its not great? ive been waiting for a good deal on a high end ultrabook or a good priced regular laptop for a long time

It's a pretty decent deal with 17% cash back from discover for this high end laptop:

FHD screen, GTX660 graphic, blu-ray, and 8GB ram

All I hate from this laptop is Win8 because Microsoft doesn't offer the Personal favor on choosing either Metro / Win 7 start screen!

Shipping - Expect 2-3 weeks
Replacement due to DOA or broken down afterward, pain in the A"" to deal with Lenovo CS

If I am not mistaken, 8GB of RAM is the max for Y580 in case some of you are thinking about upgrading it. You can go up to 16GB of RAM with the new Y500.
Wrong. There are two non-soldered RAM slots. There is no reason why it wouldn't support up to 16GB of compatible memory. It seems that most manufacturers just tend to be conservative, given that 8GB single modules are still new. They may use it as a tactic to avoid hardware support if you do happen to install a personal kit, and it doesn't happen to function properly.

Last time I tried 2 years ago, lenovo does not allow additional discounts once you use a coupon through phone. But, this price is as good as when it was cheapest on Blackfriday. Best you can get for the specs. Be weary that once your warranty expire, the support can become questionable and slow, but for the price, you really have no right to complain

I've asked and they told me 8GB is max so I am just repeating what they told me. You can try to put 16GB in there if you want.

Right. Well, looking at this thread, I think people have learned to take what they say with a few jars of salt. Wink

I want to put my foot down but these reviews [lenovo.com] are worrying, is there any way to find out if the ones on sale are from a new batch, and not an older problematic batch?

How to upgrade battery? 6 cell is a kidding for this kind of gaming system.

Yeah, I know someone who went through the same deal with Dell on one of their business class machines. Dell's site showed that 8GB was the limit. My friend pointed out that the chipset should support 16GB and asked if it was really only limited to 8GB, or if they had only validated up to 8GB. Dell swore it would only work with 8GB. So he bought a 16GB kit and installed it, and it worked. Go figure. Support isn't going to hint at anything that they haven't validated, because they don't want to be on the hook for something that hasn't been officially sanctioned.

I wonder if they would let me get an employee discount (my employer has a deal with them) and then take the coupon? This looks pretty similar to the W520 I have from work, with a slightly more consumer-oriented build. Price is smoking, but these things are large and heavy at nearly 1.5" thick and almost 6 pounds.

Those app are written by 3rd party but not Microsoft. I would like Microsoft enable this type of Option in the Win8!!! But not by downloading from 3rd party!

Well, that is your call. I doubt that will happen anytime soon, if ever. There's a reason why it isn't already available. Microsoft wants you to use their Metro/Modern UI, and to purchase apps from their store. This app is still mostly using Microsoft-developed files, wrapping the Windows 7 explorer.exe to run in Windows 8.

So the original sin is Microsoft doesn't Have the OPTION but to boost their app store by asking their customer to purchase. Well hope that Microsoft have their OWN App store with those type of Free APP, then i would be more than happy to use W8. Com'on we have paid for the fee for the system + the device.

That's the only reason I hate Win8, Personal!
