Radio Shack has the HTC One V for Virgin Mobile for $49.99 this week (Starting 12/23).
If you spend $50 or more you get $10 back in coupons, so I'm sure you can find a cheap filler to make this sweeter.

They also have the Samsung Galaxy S2 for VM for $299.99

So I think folks have been complaining that the HTC One does not have a Wi-FI Hot Spot host ahh but it does and I stumbled upon it quite by accident.

Download ES File Explorer form the Play Store.

Launch it click on the top button App Manager at the top of the screen.

Now Click Category and choose System apps Scroll down to the bottom of the screen hold the Wi_Fi Hotspot button and choose create a shortcut. There you go, maybe this is not news but it was news to me.
Did you test it to see if it worked?

The way I stumbled upon it was when I installed Apex Launcher, and the hidden Wifi Hotspot app was no longer hidden. I don't have one of these activated on Virgin Mobile, so I had another Slickdeals member test it for me, and he said it was not effective in sharing a data connection.

My .25 cent filler came yesterday. Wow, it's the smallest little thing I've ever bought in my entire life!

I have mine rooted and use it as a wifi only device. Since yesterday, it keeps prompt me to update the system to 1.08.652.11. Is this a good update to have? I seems to remember the latest system update screw up wifi.

For those of you that are interested in de-branding the phone a little bit and removing some of the Virgin Mobile apps. There is an app for that…sorry I could not resist.

The phone must be rooted. Download No Bloat Free from the app store and you can now remove all those Virgin Mobile Branded apps including activation.

What did I remove? I removed all the language packs for space except for English and Spanish incase of resale. I removed the sprint installer (anything that says sprint) and the anything that said virgin mobile. I also removed the two red buttons one was for activation and the other for downloads, the download button comes back just not branded virgin mobile. And then I moved all my apps to the SD card and rebooted. Everything is working will and the only think that is left is the VM insignia on the back of the phone and I don’t really care about that and my Otter Box Case covers that, and the actual Virgin Mobile banner, I have been thought enough with this phone that I am not going to decompile that system file to change it and the common apps to change it don’t seem to be on that app store anymore so I can live with it....welll i say that now.

Has anyone changed their banner. I think that there is an eri.xml with it already chaged to PP out there and i have it somewhare but it was not important enought to try.

Also check out Songza like Pandoria but very different.

Finally I am just staring to work on my slider and I have to say....it kind of smokes the V One in terms of responsiveness I was actually really impressed. I am going to put the slider on Page Plus too. I rooted it and de- branded it using the same app. Not as much to remove and at a quick glance did not see any language packs. Smaller screen but a nice phone and definitely more responsive then the HTC ONE the speakers alone smoke it and it would make a really nice what ever you need it to be.

What will you do with the slider? I have 2 that I bought and thought since I only paid $20, maybe I can just keep it as emergency phone

Slider smoking the One V? not sure what you're smoking but I doubt it

Anyway, if you do anything and have instructions on how to get it over to pagers plus, please post, I would be interested in seeing it.

I thought that I was clear in my post, in fact I said it twice in terms of responsiveness yes it does not freeze or hesitate, and menus are smooth in their transitions yes much smoother the V one. I also indicated that the speaker on the slider outperforms the V one and it does it smokes it. So how about you setup your slider to compare the items I discussed prior to mouthing off...I did

With regard to Page Plus, I completed the Page Plus setup on the slider tonight (it was painfull) and you can find information about how do it in the Front Page Deal forum and Wiki for that phone. Like the V one the information is in bits and pieces. And your post does not exactly motivate me to send you links and guides. In short root it, download the drivers fight with the windows to install the correct drivers, once you have the drivers installed use CdmaDevTerm to get your SPC, after you figure witch port to select because now you have like four of them available, Call PP and get a MND and MIN and have them add your ESN to the network, add a PP PRL, honestly I don't even think that you have to do the manual programming in QPST you could just do the over the air program and it should populate most of those fields for you. To be safe I used the same guide for the V one in terms of profile settings and manually applied them. Reboot make a test call. I have not tested 3G because I am not sure I am ever going to use it as a phone but I have gone through my 2 dollar credit ($2 credit that they give you =20 mins) You will need to add your PRL back if you do OTA programming.

MMS.Fix on the slider

• Dial ##3282#
• Select MMSC
• Select Edit
• enter your service code (hopefully you have changed it to 000000)
• Select edit mode
• Enter your url as http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
• Done

I will say one disadvantage of the slider over the V one is that that like many others the WiFi on the slider does not stay connected

So, people are not getting $10 off coupons emailed yet? I bought 2 phones + a filler at local Radio Shack on 12/24, but still haven't received $20 coupon yet. I thought a SA told me the coupon email arrive in 7 days or so?

Noticed that there's a new ota update for the phone. However, because my phone is rooted and has a teamwin recovery, the ota update will not install. Anybody know how to install this ota update? Thanks.

I'm also using this primarily as a wifi device. If you plan on flashing Jellybean do not do the update. It updates the radio which is causing boot loops after flashing a custom rom. Anyone who installs the update will have to flash the stock recovery, re-lock the boot loader, and then reboot the stock ruu before you can flash a custom rom. Here is the thread on xda about this http://forum.xda-developers.com/s...?t=2018518. I haven't heard of the update affecting wifi, but I never installed it.

I flashed the Nov18 stable Jellybean and the latest supersick kernel last night. Jellybean is great on this device.

Yeah custom recovery wont work with ota updates. Outside of flashing stock recovery, re-locking boot loader, and rebooting stock ruu I don't think you'll be able to install the update. I think the phone needs to be on a clean stock rom (or very close to it) for ota updates to install. I'm no expert though so maybe somebody else knows a way.

I guess I have a lot to read up. What will a new kernel do for me?

I'm definitely still learning myself, as I knew nothing about android before I bought this phone 2 weeks ago. I've done a lot of reading since, mostly on xda forums. My understanding is that a custom kernel gives you additional features from your hardware that stock kernels don't (like the ability to overclock). When you start dealing with choosing which custom kernel to use, it is less about new features and more about alternate configurations for the rom you are running. Here's the links to the rom and kernel I used.

Rom: http://goo.im/devs/gannon5197/aok...c/stables/ (Nov 18)

Kernel: http://files.simonsickle.com/?dir...oc/kernels (SuperSick-12_31_12-0032cdmarelease.img)
