They were suppose to be fiber optics but ended up starting off slow by going coper only with fiber coming later.

You are confusing Lighting ports (appearing on new iPhones and iPads) with the Thunderbolt Port technology on the iMacs and Macbooks. Light Peak is the development codename for Thunderbolt.

Lightning is Apple's re-branding of Intel's Light Peak. Light peak supposed to be multiband optical (or spectrum in this case) offering high speeds to many devices. Kind of like USB, but without worrying about compatibility as much.

Since it was deemed unfeasible to mass produce optical version of cable just yet generation 1 of light peak uses copper. It is still pretty fast though.

I am not really sure how they plan to conduct power when they go optical.

Edit: Never mind I confused it with thunderbolt as well. It is simply scaled up micro-usb with on the fly assigned wires.

Like many people have said on this review it's not reversible.
