I think he got lightning mixed up with thunderbolt.
The thunderbolt is actually a nifty interface since it combines DisplayPort and PCIe for an all-in-one cable that can stream video/power/ethernet/whatever.
The lightning cable isn't. It's basically a proprietary microUSB cable that works when plugged in either direction, but with an Apple certified chip to deter "knockoffs". Since the generics only work on one side, it's probably safe to say that it's just a more expensive, proprietary microUSB cable.
your answer sumed up everything. thanks.
it's just another connector. the name makes it sound like it will give faster data and charging speed.
I've picked up several generic versions on eBay. I've had 3 different kinds that don't work well. I've also tried the generic 30-pin to lightning connectors. Those don't work well either. I gave up and got the authentic cable from apple. Works with all my old 30-pin accessories where the other ones didn't.
Glad I did. Won't be buying the generic ones again. Save yourselves the headache.
I received two of these tried them both ways in the computer...worked flawlessly for me: synced and charged. Tried them in an ac outlet both ways and they charged fine. YMMV but mine worked as good as my oem cable and I hope they stay that way.
Just read that a cable sparked and burned so..... I'm out. What I don't get is people stand in line for this phone and are willing to plunk down $200-700 but cheap out on a cable that can potentially break it LOL
