Not sure whether this belongs to hot deals section but it's free after all. Mod, feel free to move to a more proper place.

There are several free VOIP solutions such as grooveip lite but they all suffer from bad quality on 3g. I found a clever way to make free and reliable internet (VOIP) calls even on 3g mobile data. I posted the full instruction on XDA forum.

It's complicated but it's how I can get great call quality on 3g data. I'm relying on VOIP 100% as I disabled Google Voice forwarding to my cell number.

Now I'm paying $30/m for 2000 minutes and 5GB data.

Happy Holidays!

PS: Please do not suggest Groove IP or talkatone. Theoretically, these work on 3g but in real life, it's not usable. If you can get great call quality using these apps, then consider yourself extremely lucky.

An alternative is to use the Talkatone app. It uses Google Voice, and has several different codec choices that help on 3g.
Can you hear the call using talkatone on 3g? If so, you are one of the lucky few.

Mine was choppy.

Yeah, I've had no problems hearing it on "standard quality".

Thnaks op for posting all the info. Great work. However, you use GV which means free calls only US and Canada right? If so you can mention in the title

Sorry to hear that.

I'm also using Nexus 4 and had 25% battery left after 16 hours of normal use (50% on 3g) with 4hr screen time. It's good enough for me.

OP, thanks for posting this. I will get to this after the holidays. I am assuming that we don't need a rooted phone right? Can we do this with the stock software? I want to try it for my galaxy s3 on sprint.

So for call centric you use the "Free Phone Number" plan and get NY DID?

I am curious too:
Which service gives you 2000min & 5GB data for $30?

I think this plan requires you purchasing one of their phones at retail price, is that correct? I have a phone I can "bring" but can't find that option with this plan.

Thanks!
