Well that makes me feel a little bit better although I didn't get back to return the BR player in time... wonder if they will give me a late return... I'm going to be in the neighborhood tomorrow so guess it can't hurt to try...

I don't use this BR player but my understanding is you should enable 24p with any player that supports it if your display supports it... that said I question whether this one does as it is a 60hz panel which can't support 24p properly however it's certainly worth trying...

I would find a good quality BR that is 24fps and watch it with and without 24p turned on... then go with what looks better.

You want to be watching a scene with a long pan (think side to side pan of a mountain range or something) in which you see judder at 60fps... if the judder is better and smoother at 24fps leave it on, if not, probably doesn't hurt either way.

You disagree with me in what regard, that it's passive so the number of hz doesn't matter or that it costs too much? The first is not something that's debatable. The second is my opinion because the higher end models cost almost the same.
