CA Would prefer to get it from B&H for $15 more initially rather than having to wait for, then redeeming the amazon rewards. I could use my AMEX and get 1% back to make it even cheaper and also double the warranty. Amazon: $3,499.00 - $209.94 - $104.97 = $3,184.09 + $297.42 Tax = $3,481.51 B&H: $3,499.00 - $34.99 (1% AMEX) = $3,464.01 |

I'm in CA, and had taxes incurred. Even then, I purchased this deal-- 2x warranty on my Amazon Visa put me over the top.
Other reasons: (if this helps anyone else assist in decision-making & correct me if I'm wrong): - Let's assume that pricing on the 5DM3 body is more elastic vs. the 24-105mm f/4L lens, since lenses, especially L lens, don't depreciate significantly over a short amount of time. - Even then, the 5DM3's value is buoyed by the next 2 best DSLR bodies: 5DM2 & 7D. So, there might be some room to give w/ the 5DM3's body, but not much for the next few months. (There's a parallel deal for the 7D body for $1K, and recent 5DM2 body deals went for ~$1500-$1700.) - Coming from a 60D, I want to practice and become very familiar with this body, so that I'm ready to capture excellent shots during my future photo excursions over the next few months. - Brand new equipment from an authorized dealer. - Like jeeping said, inventory hasn't been absolutely ample.

If you are serious about this camera, look up your local CL. In the SF Bay Area, BNIB 5DMk3 is going for as low as ~2600.
Overall, Canon produced a great camera with the 5Dmk3 but Nikon trumped them in terms of price/performance with the D600 and D800 combo. The 5Dmk3 compared to the D600 (~2k) is under-spec-ed and overpriced. Compared to the D800, it is no match spec-wise. So I would expect the 5Dmk3 to drop further if Canon hopes to compete with the D600. To complicate things further there is the Canon 6D FF that is ~$1900 now. FYI - Not a Nikon fanboy here, in fact, waiting for 5Dmk3 to drop further so I can snag one

Nikon did trump Canon spec-wise (especially the sensors) but the 5D3 I believe has better low light capabilities, better AF, and is faster overall. What is likely keeping the price high is Canon's new minimum advertised pricing policy. We see lots of deals through eBay vendors (BigValue, GetItDigital, etc.) almost every week selling the 5D3 for $2799. Adorama had it once at that price, but that was before the pricing policy change. With the 6D having a single SD slot, comparatively crummy AF, and inferior build to the 5D3, I think we'll see prices remain somewhat stable, just my guess though. The 5D2 is now discontinued, so those wanting robust AF and multiple memory card slots have only one choice, 5D3. |
