Just saw this Groupon and tried it out to see if it worked on renewals, and it does. The Groupon is just a redemption code that can be applied to ANY Godaddy.com account. It is in-store credit so I am pretty sure it can be applied to anything.

GoDaddy.com Online Deal [groupon.com]

Choose Between Two Options
  • $10 for $30 worth of website-building products
  • $25 for $70 worth of website-building products

Redeem at (copy/paste after logging into Godaddy): http://www.godaddy.com/redeem/groupon.aspx

It CAN be used on renewals. AND the credit is applied to your account and CAN be used over many transactions.

STACK with 29% off coupon: gdx1236g

Or 44% off domain renewal codes:
GDBBREN8
GDBBA547
gd50bbpd5

Expires Feb 27, 2013

Limit 1 per person. Limit 1 per visit. Valid only for option purchased. Valid online only. Online registration required. Must be 18 or older. Gift cards, Paypal, Alipay and CCavenue may not be used to redeem offer. Goods sold by GoDaddy.com. Paid value will be applied to first purchase. Must be an existing GoDaddy.com customer or create a new customer account to redeem.

Thanks for this list ... you can buy 1 $70 groupon for each city and apply all of them to your GoDaddy account and keep the in-store credit around until you need them for renewals.
Yep, this works for the same account with the same credit card. The math is showing that gdaddy is will be in a big hole THIS YEAR if everyone would get on this deal.

Assume that groupon is giving gdaddy a free pass and take zero commission. Normally, Gdaddy charges $8.67 for a domain (with applied coupon), with this deal, they effectively charges $3.10 for each domain. It costs gdaddy at least $5 or $6 for each domain at whole sale. So gdaddy will likely in the hole for $2 for each domain.

I assume that this is a marketing strategy to gain new accounts and retain old accounts. I think they bet on the fact that most people will stay with them and not transfer out. So next year they will make back the $2 from the SDers/FWers, but will likely make more than that from non deal hunters.

ICANN fees are nowhere near that for registrars... $3 per domain more than covers costs, including server, bandwidth and staffing needs. Godaddy isn't losing anything here, just making less. Wink

From google searches, the estimate whole sale price for these big registrars is at least $5 for .COM.

If gdaddy is paying less than $3 for a .com, and charges $9 to resellers and to retail, they are making a minimum of $6 per domain, which is contrary to the prevailing estimate from most discussions.

Do you have any concrete pricing info or just your opinion?

Nice, bought 3 of the $10. I'm surprised I'm seeing so many people going for the $25 one, since the $10 is actually a better deal.
The math:
5x$10 = $50 spent - Worth $150
2x$25 = $50 Spent - Worth $140

Amazing Deal. Thank you Slickdeals.

Purchased $25 for $70

Website 1 - $44.97 * 49%Discount code = $26.01
Website 2 - $44.97 * 49% Discount Code = $23.04
Website 3 - $50.97 * 49% Discount Code = $23.04

Total: $72.09
Groupon: ($70.00)

Total: $2.09 + $25 paid to Groupon = $27.09 for $140.91 worth of services.
Better yet...
3 Domains for 3 years each @ $3.01 a year!!!!

For the incremental savings, three more transactions, three more email accounts, etc. Lots of work. Plus greater likelihood of being flagged for multiple coupons. Easier to stock up with the $25 deal.

This world is screwed. People are too concerned with their stupid greed and consumerism...

Glad to see you people all have spines enough to fight against a corporation that doesn't give a crap about you and wants to strip away your rights.

Pathetic...

for those that bring up SOPA, you're boycotting all these companies [google.com] too right? Stick Out Tongue

I can happily say I haven't given any of those corporations my money since the whole thing went down with SOPA. It's not that hard, really. Just don't be a consumer whore.
